repairman fixing refrigeratorA substantial number of consumers have reported their Kenmore refrigerator not cooling with products purchased after January 29th, 2014. These complaints include Kenmore refrigerators that have been sold under the LG brand.

On the average, a refrigerator should operate satisfactorily for 13 years; LG itself claims that its products should last at least 20 years. According to a recent class action lawsuit, these Kenmore and LG refrigerators may stop working properly after 2 to 4 years.

If you purchased an LG or Kenmore refrigerator since Jan. 30th, 2014, you may be eligible to join the current legal action against these manufacturers.

The Reason for the Kenmore Refrigerator Not Cooling

According to plaintiffs, the problem stems from a defective linear compressor. A compressor is the central component in any refrigeration unit, whether it be the the refrigerator in your kitchen or your automobile’s air conditioning.

The compressor is essentially a pump; its purpose is to draw the refrigerant gas (either Freon or HFC-134a) inside, where it is pressurized and forced into the condenser. This is what causes cooling to occur.

Normally, a compressor is belt-driven; refrigerators would have a small motor with a belt that would cause the compressor to operate at only one speed, with a thermostat to turn it on and off as necessary.

The linear compressor used in LG and Kenmore units operates somewhat differently. It is a type of “digital inverter” compressor that operates more like the throttle of a gasoline engine that runs constantly at lower, but variable speeds. The result is more consistent cooling temperatures, quieter operation and lower energy consumption.

Unfortunately, refrigerator owners report that these linear compressors have been subject to premature failure.

Did the Company Know About the Defect?

Plaintiffs in the current class action lawsuit believe that the manufacturer had reason to know that the linear compressor responsible for the Kenmore refrigerator not cooling was defective and had a duty to notify the public.

This claim is based on thousands of complaints that have been posted to online forums as well as the LG website itself. Plaintiffs say that had they been aware of the problem, they would not have purchased LG or Kenmore products.

It is not the first time that Kenmore and LG refrigerators have had problems. In 2005, Sears, Roebuck and Co. recalled approximately 20,000 3-door refrigerators sold under the LG and Kenmore Elite brand names. According to a report from Consumer Affairs, the condenser fan motor contained a faulty component that could cause a short circuit. The result was overheating of the fan motor, which posed a serious fire danger.

LG Responds

In a communication to Digital Trends, an LG company representative said, “At LG, consumer satisfaction is paramount…LG models featuring linear compressors come with an industry-leading 10-year parts warranty and five-year labor warranty.”

Meanwhile, consumers who had their Kenmore refrigerator not cooling say they’re out the cost of spoiled food and in many cases, suffered damage to their kitchen floors because of leakage. Plaintiffs claim violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, breach of express (written) and implied warranty, and unjust enrichment.

Purchased a Ken more elite refrigerator from sears in 2015 and it has both refrigerator and freezer now not cooling

  2. Beth M. Riera says:

I purchased my Kenmore Elite 3 Door Refrigerator from Sears in January, 2013. In early September, 2015, I started having cooling and freezing issues. I called Sears to have it checked and the repair technician said it was the compressor. I was shocked but it was covered under warranty. However, it took 6 long weeks to arrive. Meanwhile, I was cooling a small amount of food in an ice chest w/bags of ice. The new compressor was installed in October, 2015 and everything was working fine. I thought that was the end of the issues. However, after about 4-5 years, I started experiencing some intermittent issues with cooling and freezing, but since it was still working, I didn’t call for a check-up. Within the last year, the issues have become greater so I called Sears repair last month. The repair technician checked the refrigerator and said it was the compressor. He said it was covered under warranty so I agreed to have it replaced. He had all the parts needed in his van. I thought that was strange since the first compressor replacement took 6 weeks to arrive. He said the one replaced in 2015 was the old version and LG came out with a new, better version, which he was going to install in my refrigerator. For some reason, he checked a list on his phone and I was charged a nominal fee for the repair and installation. However, the repair took about 2 hours and the compressor lasted 2 1/2 days. I have no idea what he installed in my refrigerator if that was the “new” version. I called and left messages for the repair technician then called Sears who said they could call Dispatch to contact the repair technician. It has been over a week and no one has returned my calls. Please add me to the list of this class action lawsuit.

  4. Denel says:

Add me to the class action suit too !

Bought a 3 door Kenmore refrigerator (has The defective LG compressor) it went out within 2 years got fixed , 1 time it stopped cooling and we lost all food for a second time , then it randomly started cooling again , was told it got hot and these compressors have a smart technology that shuts it off too cool ! Doesn’t sound smart to me . A year later stopped cooling again, lost food for the 4th time , now it needs a new compressor for $1000. Its been the compressor all along .It’s barely 4 years old !! I think Sears is purposely selling these garbage refrigerators KNOWINGLY ! So they can sell the warranties and charge for repairs ! It’s awful !!

Sears and Kenmore have been awful. They gave me the runaround saying it’s under warrAnty for 5 yrs or 10 yrs down to nope not covered.

I purchased a Kenmore Elite in 2017 from Sears. August of 2022 it no longer cools in either compartment. I am told by repair person minimum of $1000 to $1500 to fix. What a piece of junk…. $3200 down the drain. Add me to the list or lawsuit.

  7. Jonathan Ochoa says:

Same here. The fridge and freezer both stopped working and had to toss out all my groceries.

  8. Robert Rogalski says:

Purchased my house with a 2016 Kenmore Elite included – compressor recently went out – called Sears told me that there is a 10 year warranty for compressor, but I will need to pay for Labor – waited 2 months for tech to come out after they cancelled the first appointment after waiting 1 month. Tech finally comes out ,and asks if I have the receipt of the purchase for the fridge. I explained we bought the house w/ the Fridge here already so I did not have a receipt. He says he needs receipt for Compressor cost to be covered, otherwise estimate to repair was $1563.83. No one previously mentioned anything about the receipt, and they also were aware I did not originally purchase the appliance – I AM FURIOUS at how poor this process has worked, and absolutely want to be added to this list for Lawsuit.
