repairman fixing refrigeratorA substantial number of consumers have reported their Kenmore refrigerator not cooling with products purchased after January 29th, 2014. These complaints include Kenmore refrigerators that have been sold under the LG brand.

On the average, a refrigerator should operate satisfactorily for 13 years; LG itself claims that its products should last at least 20 years. According to a recent class action lawsuit, these Kenmore and LG refrigerators may stop working properly after 2 to 4 years.

If you purchased an LG or Kenmore refrigerator since Jan. 30th, 2014, you may be eligible to join the current legal action against these manufacturers.

The Reason for the Kenmore Refrigerator Not Cooling

According to plaintiffs, the problem stems from a defective linear compressor. A compressor is the central component in any refrigeration unit, whether it be the the refrigerator in your kitchen or your automobile’s air conditioning.

The compressor is essentially a pump; its purpose is to draw the refrigerant gas (either Freon or HFC-134a) inside, where it is pressurized and forced into the condenser. This is what causes cooling to occur.

Normally, a compressor is belt-driven; refrigerators would have a small motor with a belt that would cause the compressor to operate at only one speed, with a thermostat to turn it on and off as necessary.

The linear compressor used in LG and Kenmore units operates somewhat differently. It is a type of “digital inverter” compressor that operates more like the throttle of a gasoline engine that runs constantly at lower, but variable speeds. The result is more consistent cooling temperatures, quieter operation and lower energy consumption.

Unfortunately, refrigerator owners report that these linear compressors have been subject to premature failure.

Did the Company Know About the Defect?

Plaintiffs in the current class action lawsuit believe that the manufacturer had reason to know that the linear compressor responsible for the Kenmore refrigerator not cooling was defective and had a duty to notify the public.

This claim is based on thousands of complaints that have been posted to online forums as well as the LG website itself. Plaintiffs say that had they been aware of the problem, they would not have purchased LG or Kenmore products.

It is not the first time that Kenmore and LG refrigerators have had problems. In 2005, Sears, Roebuck and Co. recalled approximately 20,000 3-door refrigerators sold under the LG and Kenmore Elite brand names. According to a report from Consumer Affairs, the condenser fan motor contained a faulty component that could cause a short circuit. The result was overheating of the fan motor, which posed a serious fire danger.

LG Responds

In a communication to Digital Trends, an LG company representative said, “At LG, consumer satisfaction is paramount…LG models featuring linear compressors come with an industry-leading 10-year parts warranty and five-year labor warranty.”

Meanwhile, consumers who had their Kenmore refrigerator not cooling say they’re out the cost of spoiled food and in many cases, suffered damage to their kitchen floors because of leakage. Plaintiffs claim violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, breach of express (written) and implied warranty, and unjust enrichment.

  1. Lisa Beckmann says:

I purchased a Kenmore Elite in 2014 and for the past 5 months I have had 6 repair appointments and have gone 2 months with no refrigerator The most recent was Wednesday, November 20, 2019 and it has stopped cooling once again. I would like to be apart of the Class Action Lawsuit

    1. Very Frustrated says:

I spent $3000 in August of 2016 for a Kemore Elite (LG) “Grab&Go” model that started cooling the main compartment only to 54 degrees in early Oct 2019. Freezer was cooling to 28 degrees. First repair (new compressor) took 6 weeks. Home Warranty was purchased @ time of repair ($50/month) to reduce the labor charge to $250 out of pocket. A week later (mid Nov), a new freezer cooling problem developed, despite the new compressor. Two weeks later a 3rd service visit from a Sears “non-warranty technician”resulted in a new $1500 labor estimate since the tech recommended replacing EVERYTHING in the cooling system, including a 2nd new compreaaor. The poor tech has zero luck explaining to the claims department that the 2nd fix should be covered since it’s a new problem AND I am now under a purchased warranty with a $75 deductable as I’m 5 days past the 30 day new claim blackout period on the purchased warranty.

I’ve now started over, filing a new claim for the new freezer problem with the “Home Warranty” side of Sears BUT Incompetent Sears reassigned the new claim (freezer failure) to a 3rd party contractor in my city that doesn’t even work on LG/Kenmore, adding another 2 week delay just to get a “Sears warranty technician” out for a new, 3rd diagnosis which I expect will confirm the 2nd diagnosis and recommend replacing all cooling components.

Meanwhile, my $3,250 (soon to be $3,325) refrigerator has sat idle for 2 1/2 months!!!

I have 2 kenmore refridgerators, one died a month ago that was my extra bar fridge, now my main refridge stopped working. I lost lots of food and had to go out and find another fridge so that I have some way to keep my food. I called and was told they would send someone out on the 20th, then the 25th. Please find a way to fix this issue.

  4. Young says:

I got the same crappy Kenmore fridge, Elite French door model, purchased in 2016 with the price tag around $2,400. It stopped working months ago and a technician verified it was the linear compressor. Instead of paying more than $ 700 to fix it I purchased a new fridge (definitely not from LG)

BTW, I’m residing in Ontario Canada and found there is no active class action against this.
    Any suggestion ?

  5. Anna Mayhood says:

I purchased the Kenmore Elite refrigerator on 10/3/2016. At that time I also paid $379.00 for the 3 year warranty through sears. Sunday my refrigerator stopped cooling. I had a repair guy here today and he said it would be $1299.00 to fix it. I have called sears (Kenmore) and LG and NO ONE can help me. My 3 year warranty expired 27 days ago.

  6. Marianna Gonzalez says:

My 4 year old, Kenmore grab n go just stopped cooling. I only had 3 years of Sears warranty on it. Friends told me to contact the manufacturer because they should still cover the compressor for 5 years. I contacted LG and they told me to contact Sears, because Sears should still honor their 5 year LG compressor warranty. Sears honors the manufactures warranty only on the Kenmore “Elite” brand. Sears wants to charge close to $1200 to repair a $1700 refrigerator. I called other LG repair companies
(recommended by LG) in the area and no one will touch LG compressors. So, we’re all
screwed …. we either pay Sears for the repair, or buy a new fridge.

    1. Anna Mayhood says:

I have the Kenmore elite and they won’t cover mine.

  7. Ryan Westenhaver says:

I bought a Kenmore elite refrigerator in 2017 and it now doesn’t cool lights are on technician said I needed to buy a new fridge because it would cost me equally as much to repair this faulty Kenmore linear compressor. only used fridge for about 420 days before it burned up a compressor

  8. Denise Healy says:

My Kenmore LG keeps getting hot. The freezer doesn’t stay at zero and the fridge doesn’t stay at 37. I also had to call a tech to change the lightbulb. I purchased new drawers bc the keep cracking

  9. Aruna Advaney says:

In July of 2018, we bought a Kenmore fridge from Sears. Over the last 6 months, the LED lights keep failing. We had them replaced every time as long as the warranty covered it, but the lights keep failing after every replacement. We cannot replace the lights ourselves, only Sears can. Now the warranty expired and our dependence on Sears and on these expensive LEDs is not covered. After many hours with technicians and on the phone with Sears, Sears finally acknowledged the defect, but they won’t refund our money. They finally agreed to replace the fridge with another LED lighted Kenmore.

I read there’s a class action settlement for this defect. Could you please connect us to that settlement so we can look for a different fridge?

  10. Jeff Weeks says:

I have a Kenmore Elite refrigerator that only lasted a year and quit working. I would like to be a part of this Class action lawsuit. The Kenmore Elite I purchased is apparently made by LG
