A substantial number of consumers have reported their Kenmore refrigerator not cooling with products purchased after January 29th, 2014. These complaints include Kenmore refrigerators that have been sold under the LG brand.
On the average, a refrigerator should operate satisfactorily for 13 years; LG itself claims that its products should last at least 20 years. According to a recent class action lawsuit, these Kenmore and LG refrigerators may stop working properly after 2 to 4 years.
If you purchased an LG or Kenmore refrigerator since Jan. 30th, 2014, you may be eligible to join the current legal action against these manufacturers.
The Reason for the Kenmore Refrigerator Not Cooling
According to plaintiffs, the problem stems from a defective linear compressor. A compressor is the central component in any refrigeration unit, whether it be the the refrigerator in your kitchen or your automobile’s air conditioning.
The compressor is essentially a pump; its purpose is to draw the refrigerant gas (either Freon or HFC-134a) inside, where it is pressurized and forced into the condenser. This is what causes cooling to occur.
Normally, a compressor is belt-driven; refrigerators would have a small motor with a belt that would cause the compressor to operate at only one speed, with a thermostat to turn it on and off as necessary.
The linear compressor used in LG and Kenmore units operates somewhat differently. It is a type of “digital inverter” compressor that operates more like the throttle of a gasoline engine that runs constantly at lower, but variable speeds. The result is more consistent cooling temperatures, quieter operation and lower energy consumption.
Unfortunately, refrigerator owners report that these linear compressors have been subject to premature failure.
Did the Company Know About the Defect?
Plaintiffs in the current class action lawsuit believe that the manufacturer had reason to know that the linear compressor responsible for the Kenmore refrigerator not cooling was defective and had a duty to notify the public.
This claim is based on thousands of complaints that have been posted to online forums as well as the LG website itself. Plaintiffs say that had they been aware of the problem, they would not have purchased LG or Kenmore products.
It is not the first time that Kenmore and LG refrigerators have had problems. In 2005, Sears, Roebuck and Co. recalled approximately 20,000 3-door refrigerators sold under the LG and Kenmore Elite brand names. According to a report from Consumer Affairs, the condenser fan motor contained a faulty component that could cause a short circuit. The result was overheating of the fan motor, which posed a serious fire danger.
LG Responds
In a communication to Digital Trends, an LG company representative said, “At LG, consumer satisfaction is paramount…LG models featuring linear compressors come with an industry-leading 10-year parts warranty and five-year labor warranty.”
Meanwhile, consumers who had their Kenmore refrigerator not cooling say they’re out the cost of spoiled food and in many cases, suffered damage to their kitchen floors because of leakage. Plaintiffs claim violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, breach of express (written) and implied warranty, and unjust enrichment.

I purchased a kenmore elite in 2014 suddenly stop cooling. got a diagnostic said the compressor was faulty. Got a second diagnostic said the evaporator fan was not blowing. spent money on that and still not cooling.
We have a Kenmore Elite, purchased in 2013. It suddenly quit cooling. Repair man came out and said its a compressor and to get our name in on the class action lawsuit. According to him it would cost about $1700 to fix.
Count me in the class action lawsuit.
I buy the Kenmore side by side 3 1/2 yrs ago the compressor is not working. I pay the $80 for the technician to come check and a sears special technician for $148.00.
The sears technician quote me $1,400 to repair and other company $1,020 for the repair.
Now have to replace the refrigerator.
I have a 5 year old Kenmore Elite French Door Refrigerator that is 5 years old. Waited two weeks for Sears repairman. Compressor plus several other parts are broken. Cost to repair $1100. In addition I lost $200 in food plus $80 for original repairman, plus $125 for Sears repairman. I am beyond angry. I went out and had to buy another refrigerator. I will NEVER buy Kenmore or LG again. Count me in a class action suit. THe manufacturer is evil.
I have kenmore pro that quit a year ago and had to have compressor replaced. Repair guy said probably only last 2-3 years. I can’t afford to replace compressor every 2-3 years and replace everything in fridge. I would like to be included in class action lawsuit.
