Woman phoning repairman because her LG refrigerator not cooling.

A class action lawsuit filed in April claims that a defect with LG and Kenmore refrigerators causes the appliances to fail within a few years of purchase. Consumers who have noticed their LG refrigerator not cooling may be able to pursue compensation from the manufacturer.

LG Refrigerator Class Action Lawsuit

According to the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit, defective compressors in LG and Kenmore refrigerators cause the appliances to stop cooling. Plaintiffs Gary S., Diane T., and Michael B. claim that this same defect caused each of their refrigerators to fail after just a few years. The plaintiffs say they purchased their LG refrigerators between September 2015, and June 28, 2016, with price tags ranging from $1,400 to $7,000.

Each of their refrigerators allegedly began failing within two years of the purchase date. When Gary noticed his LG refrigerator not cooling in December 2018, he says a Sears repair technician determined the refrigerator’s compressor to be the problem. It took three visits from multiple repair people to fix and replace the compressor, leaving him without a working refrigerator for a month, according to the lawsuit. He says he also spent several hundred dollars for the repair work and lost money by having to throw away spoiled food.

LG advertises its products as being long-lasting, including its refrigerators, which the company touts as having a 20-year life span. Gary and the other named plaintiffs claim that if they had known about LG’s defective refrigerator compressors, they would not have purchased the pricey appliances.

Another plaintiff claims that the technician who fixed his broken LG compressor said the part should have lasted at least 10 years.

The plaintiffs are seeking reimbursement for the costs associated with the compressor failure, including parts and repairs, spoiled food, and damages for the time spent without a working refrigerator.

Why is My LG Refrigerator Not Cooling?

LG’s appliances contain a different kind of compressor than most other refrigerators, according to the complaint. Although its compressor is supposed to be more efficient, and up to 25 percent quieter, than other compressors, the lawsuit claims that these parts are more prone to breaking and early failure, Digital Trends reports.

According to consumers and repair people, the compressor issue is widespread. An appliance repair business owner has called the LG compressor failure issue “a pandemic,” according to KUTV. Some appliance repair companies are now refusing to work on LG appliances.

If you own an LG or Kenmore refrigerator that has stopped cooling within a few years of purchase, you may be eligible to join or file a class action lawsuit and pursue compensation for your defective appliance.

The LG Refrigerator Class Action Lawsuit is Case No. 8:19-cv-00610, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

We bought our Kenmore Elite in 2016 and it died this week. We were told compressors should last 10-13 years. Would like to be added to this class action suit if it is done again!
