repairman fixing refrigeratorA substantial number of consumers have reported their Kenmore refrigerator not cooling with products purchased after January 29th, 2014. These complaints include Kenmore refrigerators that have been sold under the LG brand.

On the average, a refrigerator should operate satisfactorily for 13 years; LG itself claims that its products should last at least 20 years. According to a recent class action lawsuit, these Kenmore and LG refrigerators may stop working properly after 2 to 4 years.

If you purchased an LG or Kenmore refrigerator since Jan. 30th, 2014, you may be eligible to join the current legal action against these manufacturers.

The Reason for the Kenmore Refrigerator Not Cooling

According to plaintiffs, the problem stems from a defective linear compressor. A compressor is the central component in any refrigeration unit, whether it be the the refrigerator in your kitchen or your automobile’s air conditioning.

The compressor is essentially a pump; its purpose is to draw the refrigerant gas (either Freon or HFC-134a) inside, where it is pressurized and forced into the condenser. This is what causes cooling to occur.

Normally, a compressor is belt-driven; refrigerators would have a small motor with a belt that would cause the compressor to operate at only one speed, with a thermostat to turn it on and off as necessary.

The linear compressor used in LG and Kenmore units operates somewhat differently. It is a type of “digital inverter” compressor that operates more like the throttle of a gasoline engine that runs constantly at lower, but variable speeds. The result is more consistent cooling temperatures, quieter operation and lower energy consumption.

Unfortunately, refrigerator owners report that these linear compressors have been subject to premature failure.

Did the Company Know About the Defect?

Plaintiffs in the current class action lawsuit believe that the manufacturer had reason to know that the linear compressor responsible for the Kenmore refrigerator not cooling was defective and had a duty to notify the public.

This claim is based on thousands of complaints that have been posted to online forums as well as the LG website itself. Plaintiffs say that had they been aware of the problem, they would not have purchased LG or Kenmore products.

It is not the first time that Kenmore and LG refrigerators have had problems. In 2005, Sears, Roebuck and Co. recalled approximately 20,000 3-door refrigerators sold under the LG and Kenmore Elite brand names. According to a report from Consumer Affairs, the condenser fan motor contained a faulty component that could cause a short circuit. The result was overheating of the fan motor, which posed a serious fire danger.

LG Responds

In a communication to Digital Trends, an LG company representative said, “At LG, consumer satisfaction is paramount…LG models featuring linear compressors come with an industry-leading 10-year parts warranty and five-year labor warranty.”

Meanwhile, consumers who had their Kenmore refrigerator not cooling say they’re out the cost of spoiled food and in many cases, suffered damage to their kitchen floors because of leakage. Plaintiffs claim violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, breach of express (written) and implied warranty, and unjust enrichment.

I brought a Sears Kenmore Elite Bottom Freezer Refrigerator, Model 79573133410, 2017 with a five year warranty. Warranty expired May 3, 1922. OnJuly 6, 2023, my refrigerator was not cooling and ice maker stop working. Inside my refrigerator was 51 degrees and bottom was 31 degrees, per the technician from the warranty company that I contacted from my expired warranty. Technician came and charged $99.00 to look at my refrigerator and said it will cost $1,181.59 to repair. The fridge was leaking inside unit., and the condenser will be going next. The condenser was a little cool. He said it was the Evaporator drier Assy refrigerator capillary line, valve. I had to throw out all of my food, I had just went shopping. Fridge is empty now. I will have to buy a new fridge . I am not very happy. Why are they putting defective parts on these products. I paid for a warranty for 5 years. They wanted me to sign up for another warranty, not worth it. I want to join in on the class action lawsuit.

Purchased Kenmore elite in 2016. Quit cooling right after 5 year warranty ran out. Had I known it was made by LG I would not have purchased. I wanted something with some history and good reputation as I thought Kenmore/Whirlpool was. It would be nice if it would say somewhere that it was made by LG. Didn’t realize that until I was asked if it was 795 model. Then was told it was made by LG and had defective parts so they won’t work on it. Online tech went through error code diagnostics. Sealed system issue, probably compressor. Then they said that the warranty was out and there’s no sears techs anywhere near here anymore to work on it and nobody else is willing. Apparently they have not fixed the compressor issue so if it does get fixed the just put the same kind of faulty compressor in. Now I hear that the compressor has a 10 year warranty but nobody seems to know how that works. Kenmore says get a hold of Sears. Sears says to contact Kenmore. Really disgusting. Wish I would have known it was LG with no refrigerator reputation rather than whirlpool.

  6. Gilbert Gingras says:

I purchased a Kenmore Elite model 795.71073.013 from Sears Canada in October 2014. The refrigerator stopped cooling so I had it verified by a technician who confirmed that the issue was the linear compressor. Including parts & labor, the cost of repair was over $1,500.
The LG Web site indicates that there is a 10-year warranty on the compressor so I try contacting LG’s Customer Care Service who quickly direct me to the Kenmore site. The Kenmore Web site mentions that the linear compressors on certain Kenmore Elite models have a 10-year warranty coverage. Sounds good to me. I decide to contact Customer Care for details on how I should proceed. To my surprise, I am told that the warranty is for US purchases only. I then searched for a Kenmore division in Canada but could not find any.
At this point, the warranty coverage seemed out of reach and needed a fridge so I bought one from a reliable brand that I will be receiving in the coming days.

In regards to the Class action lawsuit, count me in.
