repairman fixing refrigeratorA substantial number of consumers have reported their Kenmore refrigerator not cooling with products purchased after January 29th, 2014. These complaints include Kenmore refrigerators that have been sold under the LG brand.

On the average, a refrigerator should operate satisfactorily for 13 years; LG itself claims that its products should last at least 20 years. According to a recent class action lawsuit, these Kenmore and LG refrigerators may stop working properly after 2 to 4 years.

If you purchased an LG or Kenmore refrigerator since Jan. 30th, 2014, you may be eligible to join the current legal action against these manufacturers.

The Reason for the Kenmore Refrigerator Not Cooling

According to plaintiffs, the problem stems from a defective linear compressor. A compressor is the central component in any refrigeration unit, whether it be the the refrigerator in your kitchen or your automobile’s air conditioning.

The compressor is essentially a pump; its purpose is to draw the refrigerant gas (either Freon or HFC-134a) inside, where it is pressurized and forced into the condenser. This is what causes cooling to occur.

Normally, a compressor is belt-driven; refrigerators would have a small motor with a belt that would cause the compressor to operate at only one speed, with a thermostat to turn it on and off as necessary.

The linear compressor used in LG and Kenmore units operates somewhat differently. It is a type of “digital inverter” compressor that operates more like the throttle of a gasoline engine that runs constantly at lower, but variable speeds. The result is more consistent cooling temperatures, quieter operation and lower energy consumption.

Unfortunately, refrigerator owners report that these linear compressors have been subject to premature failure.

Did the Company Know About the Defect?

Plaintiffs in the current class action lawsuit believe that the manufacturer had reason to know that the linear compressor responsible for the Kenmore refrigerator not cooling was defective and had a duty to notify the public.

This claim is based on thousands of complaints that have been posted to online forums as well as the LG website itself. Plaintiffs say that had they been aware of the problem, they would not have purchased LG or Kenmore products.

It is not the first time that Kenmore and LG refrigerators have had problems. In 2005, Sears, Roebuck and Co. recalled approximately 20,000 3-door refrigerators sold under the LG and Kenmore Elite brand names. According to a report from Consumer Affairs, the condenser fan motor contained a faulty component that could cause a short circuit. The result was overheating of the fan motor, which posed a serious fire danger.

LG Responds

In a communication to Digital Trends, an LG company representative said, “At LG, consumer satisfaction is paramount…LG models featuring linear compressors come with an industry-leading 10-year parts warranty and five-year labor warranty.”

Meanwhile, consumers who had their Kenmore refrigerator not cooling say they’re out the cost of spoiled food and in many cases, suffered damage to their kitchen floors because of leakage. Plaintiffs claim violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, breach of express (written) and implied warranty, and unjust enrichment.

  1. Matt Collins says:

I have a 3.5 year old Kenmore 79312 refrigerator that I bought May 4, 2018 that stopped cooling. Oh and my service appointment through SEARS is a month out! It sounds like it is running, but freezer and fridge will not get cold any more. Compressor runs and fan is working… I was told by several service techs from other companies that the compressor may not be functioning properly OR there is a pinhole leaking freon… we were told that the refrigerator is an worthless paperweight. Either way, this is completely ridiculous that we paid 949.99 (on sale) and it is junk after 3.5 years. Losing food is one thing, but being out of 949.00 is infuriating!!
Okay now lets talk about SEARS so called customer service… it doesn’t exist! Try calling all 5 numbers I found and they either tie back into each-other OR you cannot EVER speak to anyone in the U.S. to get this resolved. I feel like my family has been robbed!

Bought a Kenmore Elite Refrigerator September 2018 from Sears hometown store, Oswego Illinois. Well here we are February 2022, 3 1/2 years later it quit cooling, lost all of our food and just found out about the compressor defect. Called Sears warranty center, can’t even get anyone out to look at it till April 5th. $3000 down the drain, we are devastated to lose so much. I want our money back for this junk, we shouldn’t have to worry about loosing all our food every 2 to 3 years! Model number 795.73167.610

Have a Sears Kenmore elite refrigerator model #79573167610 purchased 12-16-17. It stopped cooling and Sears repair service said it was LGs fault. LG says it’s Sears warranty that should cover it Sears warranty repair men will not come look at it. No one else will come look at it because it is a Sears with LG electronics. It stopped cooling nine months ago and finally took the fridge 120 miles to a repair man who said throw it away but told us there is a class action lawsuit on them. What do I do?

      1. Kevin Radinovich says:

Now to join the class action lawsuit they want a $1 one time fee and $28 every month until it is settled. Are you kidding me!!!!!!!! This is just another scam!

    2. Rafael Lomeli says:

i contacted LG directly. i was told there is a 10 year warranty on the compressor and a 5 year on the labor

  3. Joseph Irmen says:

Have bought our kemore elite from sears in 2017 it just went out in 2022. It was the Compressor no one wanted to help and all sears did was try to sell me a appliance warranty for the house. That was not what I wanted even though they were very persistent. I wanted my refrigerator fixed. And figuring it out with all these unfortunate people I had the same problem with my refrigerator. I would like to join the classaction law suit.

  4. Shlomo says:

    1. Rick Christjansen says:

  6. Carl Muse says:

I have a Kenmore Elite refrigerator that stop cooling on Christmas day. Call service and he said the compressor was bad.
Not sure now to get the replaced under warranty and its over a week before a technician can come out.
Difficult living without a refrigerator and freezer.
How long is the process to get a new refrigerator or get this one repaired?

    1. Angela says:

My 4 month old Kenmore refrigerator stopped working on Christmas day as well. Technician came out today says that compressor going bad, but first day to repair is Jan 20, 2022. What the heck.

  7. Aurelia says:

Kenmore 795.7249 purchased and installed new in 5/2017 by Sears. LG-built inline compressor faiIed in 12/21. According to Sears tech, my warranty is only 1 years old, on an appliance that is supposed to last over a decade?! Not only loss of food, but also expensive medications that need to be temperature controlled. I would like to be contacted ASAP.

  8. Tonya Wheeler says:

We have a Kenmore 3 door refrigerator we bought in 2018. The freezer works but the refrigerator has stop cooling. Is there anything that can be done? We have called and were told there is no guarantee on how long a refrigerator will last, but for crying out loud it should last more then 3 years for the price we payed for it.

  9. Mike Klein says:

My Kenmore elite 795.74033.411 LG compressor fail. I repair person check the appliance and verified that the compressor fail. He also noted that the repair cost would be substantial. I would like more information regarding joining any class action suit against Kenmore/LG. The local Sear’s repair said I would have to wait 3 weeks before the could make a service call so I had an independent repair company verify the compressor was an LG

  10. Lynn Cadigan says:

This sounds like a familiar story. Since we bought our Kenmore model #111.73022711 refrigerator within the past 3 years, we have had a faulty ice maker which we haven’t bothered to get fixed. Basically the ice comes out in big sheet, not cubes. More recently, the refrigerator started to make a horrible noise when closed. When the doors open the sounds goes away. Eventually the temperature was warm. We called in a repair person who said that we purchased one of the worst appliances. He charged us $89 to investigate it on 11/12/21, actually not bad. His suggestion…unplug it to defrost it, plug it back to see if it works. He gave us the warning that it would probably freeze up again. Now, 2.5 weeks later it is making that dreaded sound again.

    1. Chris says:

That is a Daewoo Fridge not LG.
