Gas stone pollutants class action lawsuits overview:

  • Who: Consumers recently filed class action lawsuits against Sub-Zero, Wolf Appliance, LG and Samsung.
  • Why: The consumers filed the complaints over claims the companies failed to disclose the risks associated with using gas stove products.
  • Where: The class action lawsuits were filed in Wisconsin, Illinois and California federal courts.

Consumers recently filed several class action lawsuits accusing companies of failing to disclose the risks associated with using gas stoves.

Consumers claim the companies, including Samsung, LG, Sub-Zero and Wolf Appliance, left customers in the dark about air pollutants and health risks they claim are associated with gas stove use.

Sub-Zero, Wolf Appliance failed to disclose gas stove health risks, class action says

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Sub-Zero and Wolf Appliance earlier this month, arguing the companies failed to disclose health risks associated with the use of their gas stove, cooktop and oven products.

The consumer behind the complaint argues studies show that gas stove products like the ones Sub-Zero and Wolf sell “emit air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter.”

They allege Sub-Zero and Wolf know their gas stove products “emit harmful pollutants” and that consumers who use them are at an increased risk of developing respiratory illness.

The consumer also claims Sub-Zero and Wolf could have manufactured their gas stove, cooktop and oven products using alternative, and long-available, designs that reduce the harmful emissions the appliances produce.

Samsung failed to warn customers of harmful gas risk, class action says

A consumer filed a similar class action lawsuit against Samsung near the end of March, arguing the company failed to warn its customers about risks associated with using its gas stoves, ovens and gas ranges.

The consumer behind the complaint claims Samsung fails to warn its customers that using gas stoves comes with “significant pollutant risks,” while alleging the products emit gasses that can worsen lung diseases such as asthma.

Samsung allegedly fails to incorporate anything on its packaging, instructions or warning labels that would indicate its gas stove products emit harmful gasses, including nitrogen oxides, according to the class action.

LG responsible for informing customers about gas stove pollutant risks, class action claims

Also in March, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against LG Electronics, claiming the company failed to disclose the alleged air pollutant risk associated with using its gas stove models.

The consumer behind the complaint claims they would not have purchased their LG gas stove had they known about alleged pollutant risks, which they argue are linked to health problems such as cancer, respiratory illness and cardiovascular issues.

They also accuse LG of failing to manufacture and design its gas stoves in an alternative way that would have mitigated the risk of the appliances releasing air pollutants.

The consumer argues gas stove manufacturers, such as LG, are responsible for informing their customers about the pollutant risks associated with gas stoves so they can make an informed decision before purchase.

CPSC clarifies it will not ban gas stoves following pushback from gas industry, lawmakers

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) clarified earlier this year that it is not considering a ban on gas stoves after the agency received pushback from both the gas industry and lawmakers.

The CPSC came under fire after one of its commissioners reportedly told Bloomberg the agency was considering placing a ban on gas stoves to address hazards associated with using them.

CPSC Head Alexander Hoehn-Saric ultimately clarified that, while the agency was “not looking to ban gas stoves,” it is researching different ways to decrease indoor air quality hazards.

The Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization have both reportedly said gas stoves emit harmful air pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, that are linked to cancer and cardiovascular problems.

In June of 2023 we bought a Wolf Stove Range as well as Sub Zero fridge. Our gas stove started leaking gas 3 weeks after installation. Called the repair person who’s been to our home for 4 visits and every damn visit we had to wait for 2-4 weeks for parts! Parts that were installed failed multiple times. We’ve contacted Wolf many times and talked to several people who “promised” to make things right. It’s mid of October now and my husband is forced to cook our breakfast at the camping range out of garage and I use Ninja foodie to cook lunch and dinner. The company does not give a crap about it’s customers as well as the Grand Appliance store. Our calls were unanswered by our sales rep. Both wolf and grand appliance just casted us a drift! At this point we want a brand new stove because due to multiple gas leaks at current range we are just afraid to use it. So far NOBODY has contacted us from Wolf. We are waiting on another part and now they said wait till November 3rd! Our tech guy is now having a surgery and we have to wait for him to get back to work…

I purchased a gas range by LG about 3 years ago. While I enjoy the control gas provides for cooking, I have been alarmed by the recent information about how unhealthy gas appliances are. The new house we’re building is designed for an induction stove and all electric appliances in the home.

  8. JHILL says:

My son purchased a Samsung gas range April 2020 for me. Just recently the oven would not heat over 150 degrees. There solution was to sell me a new range. No thanks!
