Sub-Zero, Wolf gas stove pollutant risk class action lawsuit overview:
- Who: John Bankhurst filed a class action lawsuit against Sub-Zero Group Inc. and Wolf Appliance Inc.
- Why: Bankhurst argues Sub-Zero and Wolf failed to disclose the alleged health risks associated with using their gas stove, cooktop and oven products.
- Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Wisconsin federal court.
- What are my options: Macy’s offers stove alternatives to Sub-Zero and Wolf.
Sub-Zero Group and Wolf Appliance make, sell, distribute and market gas stoves, cooktops and ovens without disclosing the risk of pollutants, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
Plaintiff John Bankhurst claims Sub-Zero and Wolf are aware its products “emit health-harming pollutants” but failed to disclose that cooking with gas “harms the health of the households that use it.”
Bankhurst argues studies have shown gas stoves “emit air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter” at levels he says health agencies have determined to be unsafe.
“Defendants are aware of the fact that their Products emit harmful pollutants. Defendants are further aware that use of gas cooking appliances increases the rates of respiratory illness in adults and children,” the Wolf class action states.
Bankhurst wants to represent a nationwide class and Illinois subclass of consumers who purchased Sub-Zero and Wolf gas stoves, cooktops, and ovens during the applicable statute of limitations.
Sub-Zero, Wolf could have alternatively designed gas stoves, to avoid alleged risks
Sub-Zero and Wolf could have avoided the risks allegedly associated with its gas stoves, cooktops, and ovens by producing them using “reasonable alternative designs,” the class action alleges.
“Alternative designs that ‘reduce harmful emissions, without sacrificing heat, have been available for decades,’” the Wolf class action states.
The class action alleges Sub-Zero and Wolf are guilty of fraudulent omission, breach of implied warranties and quasi-contract, and of violating the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
Plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and requesting injunctive relief along with an award of treble, statutory and punitive damages for himself and all class members.
Similar class action lawsuits were recently filed against Samsung and LG over claims the companies failed to disclose the alleged health risks associated with using their gas stoves.

Hello,
I have a Wolf stove, can you please tell me what the statute of limitations is on this law suit? I bought it in 2014-16
I have purchased an wolf stove and the smell of gas when I try to used the burners
I have been experiencing with my Wolf stove, which I purchased in 2019. I have been a satisfied customer so far, but I am now facing a problem that requires help
Approximately a year after purchasing the stove, I noticed a strong smell of gas being emitted from both the top burner and the oven during the first 2-3 minutes of operation. Concerned for my safety and the proper functioning of the appliance, I reached out to the repairs and customer service department for guidance and support.
To my surprise, I was informed that the cause of the gas odor was due to my use of incorrect cleaning chemicals. I want to assure you that I have always followed the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning instructions and have never used any chemicals or substances that could potentially damage the stove or its components.
I have taken utmost care of my Wolf stove and adhered to the guidelines provided in the user manual. Therefore, I believe there may be an underlying issue or a technical malfunction causing this gas odor, rather than a cleaning chemicals-related problem.
I have had a total of 3 Wolf stoves. I cook daily on the gas burners and stove and have developed breathing problem that have become worse and worse over the years.
I have been treated for allergies, asthma, and more, to no avail. My problems have become worse, and more of a mystery as time has gone on. The problem is possibly exposure to the toxins emoted as a result of the Wolf gas burners/stove.
Please contact me. I would like to be part of the class action law suit.
