LG microwave lawsuit overview:
- Who: First Liberty Insurance Corp. a/s/o Rodney and Jodi Wooten filed a lawsuit against LG Electronics USA Inc.
- Why: First Liberty claims LG is responsible for a Pennsylvania house fire that allegedly originated from an LG microwave and caused more than $1 million in damages.
- Where: The lawsuit was filed in Pennsylvania federal court.
LG Electronics USA is aware of an issue with an LG microwave that malfunctioned and started a fire that caused more than $1 million in damages to the home of a Pennsylvania couple, a new lawsuit alleges.
First Liberty Insurance Corp. claims LG knows the control panels of the model of LG microwave are defective.
The house fire caused “substantial damage” to the Pennsylvania home of Rodney and Jodi Wooten on or about Feb. 19, 2021, costing First Liberty Insurance more than $1 million in insurance payouts, the LG microwave lawsuit alleges.
First Liberty argues the Wootens only used the LG microwave “in the manner in which it was intended” and that an investigation determined that a failure within the microwave had caused the fire.
The Wootens are not part of the claims against LG “pursuant to the terms and conditions of (their) insurance policy,” which subrogated First Liberty to “all rights, claims and causes of action that its insureds may have,” according to the LG lawsuit.
First Liberty accuses LG of negligence, breach of implied warranty, LG microwave lawsuit states
First Liberty claims LG is guilty of negligence, breach of implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose, breach of implied warranty of merchantability, strict product liability and violating Pennsylvania Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law.
It requests a judgment in the amount of $1,029,159.13 to or on behalf of its insured to compensate for the fire related damage to the Wooten’s property. The amount is not final and is expected to increase, according to the LG lawsuit.
In other LG news, a trio of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against the company last year, arguing the company knowingly sells refrigerators equipped with defective craft ice makers that quickly stop working.

10 thoughts onLG lawsuit claims microwave caused house fire with $1M in damages
My 5 month old LG Neo Chef 56L microwave just all of a sudden started spouting flames and smoke out of the side. LG refuses to aknowledge that there is any damage and they returned it as fixed. I took the microwave home to find that it was making a strange noise when trying to heat up some food. I took it back for repairs but they once again claimed that it was fixed. They are refusing to give me a refund.

My LG microwave spontaneously caused a kitchen fire (IT WASN’T IN USE) in my home this past Sunday 5/21. I was running errands and my husband and son were out back having a pool day. They smelled smoke and by the time my husband got to it with fire extinguisher, it had consumed a large area of the kitchen. Kitchen has to be redone and extensive smoke damage to all areas of my house.
