UPDATE: September 2020, the LG refrigerator cooling defect class action settlement is now open. Click here to file a claim.

LG Electronics has reached a settlement deal for a LG refrigerator class action lawsuit to resolve claims that the company’s refrigerators stopped cooling due to a compressor defect.

According to the settlement motion, about 1.5 million consumers could receive cash payments and extended warranty coverage. The motion is under consideration for approval in New Jersey court.

Under the terms of the settlement, LG would make cash payments to about 1.55 million consumers in the Settlement Class.

Class Members are able to receive payments for reimbursement of parts and labor costs in addition to property loss, such as food or medicine spoiled due to the LG Electronics refrigerators not cooling the items, according to the settlement terms.

LG will also compensate Class Members for unsuccessful or delayed repairs, or the cost of replacing the refrigerator.

If affected consumers are able to document their claims, they could be eligible for up to several thousand dollars, the settlement says. Those who provide attestation but not documentation may be eligible to recover up to $450.

There is no cap on the payments.

Class Members also will receive an extended warranty that will cover the full repair cost for cooling failures in the LG Electronics refrigerators and related property loss for five years from the date the appliance was purchased, the class action settlement says.

To bolster this warranty service, LG has also agreed to employ more technicians and put a dedicated team in place to address the cooling failures, the class action settlement claims. LG will also develop more reliable replacement parts.

Attorneys’ fees and costs are subject to Court approval and will be paid separately. Those awards will not reduce settlement benefits.

The Settlement Class includes anyone in the U.S. who bought one of the covered models of LG Electronics refrigerators produced between Jan. 1, 2014 and Dec. 31, 2017.

Consumers who previously released claims in favor of LG, those who purchased refrigerators manufactured after Dec. 31, 2017, and those who bought Kenmore refrigerators from Sears are not eligible to be included in the Class, according to the class action settlement.

Also excluded are consumers who bought LG refrigerator models of which fewer than 1,000 units were sold “or for which the service rate for No-Cooling Events was less than 1% of sales,” the settlement says.

Plaintiff Michael Bentley’s class action lawsuit was consolidated with other similar complaints dealing with the allegedly defective LG Electronics refrigerators.

According to Bentley’s complaint, he had purchased an LG Kenmore refrigerator for about $1,500 from a Michigan Sears in 2015, after seeing ads touting the appliance as high quality and fully functional.

Bentley said he received additional information about the refrigerator and its compressor in the form of brochures and owners’ manuals, but did not see any disclosures that the compressor was defective or prone to failure.

Bentely’s Kenmore refrigerator failed because of the compressor defect in September 2018, the complaint says. It allegedly would not stay cool and spoiled his food.

He requested repairs through Sears, and although he was told the repairs would be covered under the warranty, he was charged $100 to diagnose the issue. He says he was ultimately charged $700 for a replacement compressor.

But the refrigerator failed from the compressor defect again on March 20, 2019, according to the complaint. Again, the repairs — this time completed by a local repair shop — cost about $750, and the repair technician allegedly informed him that he was “wasting money on repairs because the refrigerator would likely fail again from the same problem.”

Bentley says he replaced the refrigerator with a General Electric model in April 2019.

Had he known the LG refrigerator was defective he would not have bought it, would have paid a different price or would have returned it, the class action lawsuit says.

The plaintiffs claimed the linear compressors in their LG Electronics refrigerators were defective and prone to failure, causing them to be unable to cool their contents.

The class action lawsuit also alleged that LG had long known about the defective compressors after many consumers and LG-authorized repair technicians reported the failures to the company.

However, LG has “vigorously disputed Plaintiffs’ allegations,” according to the settlement motion.

A final approval hearing on the settlement motion has yet to be scheduled.

Purchased fridge in august of 2018, and in August 2020 it has failed. I did purchase the extended warranty however I have been without a fridge for going on 3 months. They attempted to fix it the first time and that only fixed the freezer. Waiting on 2nd service call to diagnose the fridge issue and wait another two weeks for the appt to fix it!! Beyond frustrated!

Why was the Kenmore not included if they are manufactured by LG. I have a dead $3000 fridge that can’t be fixed even after a brand new compressor and main board have been installed.

Sears charged me $119 for diagnostic fee and told me the compressor went bad. They wanted $474 for repair/replacement cost. I fought for months and paid $180 for shipping for the compressor. 3rd party repairman said Sears was wrong, the main board is dead. I ordered a new board and paid $274 for it. Had it expedited in hope to have the fridge fixed right way. Discovered a new problem with the fridge after the new board was installed. Power fluctuates all over the place and the compressor could not stay powered on. It keeps shutting itself off so fridge wouldn’t cool.

Attorneys, please include Kenmore in this or open a new class action. There are too many of us stuck with expensive DEAD fridges. Consider the stress, griefs and inconveniences these failures have caused for times like this. I tried to order another fridge and could not find any. Most won’t be available for delivery until December of 2020. I don’t know about other people, my family have been without a fridge since early July and having young kids home doing distance learning does not make things easier for working families.

We bought our beautiful LG French Door refrigerator from RCWilley on 5/19/15. Throughout 2019 and again this year we have had many, many replacement parts and repairs. I was told the same thing by technicians as others were told – that it would likely happen again. I was also told by a technician that LG was moving their plant from South Korea to Alabama, so hopefully that would improve product quality. LG told me that because of the many repairs/parts, I basically had a new refrigerator and they would extend the warranty. When I wrote to validate that (no response) and then called, I was told there is no such thing. One time I lamented to a tech about the cost of food loss and he encouraged me to call LG about that. They did send me a check for $200. Next time the compressor went out, I asked to again be compensated for food loss and was told it was only a one time courtesy. In addition to food loss costs and the $150 I once paid out of pocket for repairs, is the stress of it all and having to be available for their window of opportunity to repair. Many parts – not just the compressor, but the evaporator, were replaced multiple times. So, yes, I am interested in filing a claim.

Please add me to this! I bought a kenmore from sears in 9/3/2017 and it stopped cooling the last week of august 2020! Repair guy came out told me kenmore is an LG and that they are known to have this issue. He replaced the compressor- but it stopped cooling again. I have been without a refrigerator for over a month with sears trying to fix the thing!

  7. Kelley Grassi says:

please add me to this settlement. We purchased a Kenmore refrigerator in the summer of 2016. It stopped working and was not able to be repaired in July of 2019.

  8. Doris Flores says:

Please include me on the lg refrigerator class action claim I bought one back 2016 had to let it go cause it was causing me too much money out of pocket expenses

  9. Edwardo Roman says:

I purchase a kenmore grab and go refrigerator in 2018 and the compressor went out in Sept 2020. I have a repair man come out and was charge 150.00 to tell me it wasn’t worth fixing because the compressor on these go out. He suggested calling sears because it should still be covered only to find out it only had a one year warranty. This is totally unacceptable if they knew this was a problem and care about their brand they should had a recall and replace with a quality part!Edwardo

  10. William A. Carpenter says:

I purchased a Kenmore Elite side-by-side Refrigerator 21 December 2016. The Refrigerator stopped freezing two days ago (23 September 2020). I called a local repairman and he diagnosed it as a compressor failure. He advised that this model refrigerator has an LG compressor and are known to fail in short periods of time. I would like to know if I am legible to join this lawsuit, since even the repair is going to run several hundred dollars.
