UPDATE 2: On Nov. 16, 2020, the Court granted an extension and deadlines have changed. The claim form deadline has been extended to Feb. 5, 2021, and the opt-out and objection deadline has been extended to Dec. 10, 2020.

UPDATE: September 2020, the LG refrigerator cooling defect class action settlement is now open. Click here to file a claim.

LG Electronics has reached a settlement deal for a LG refrigerator class action lawsuit to resolve claims that the company’s refrigerators stopped cooling due to a compressor defect.

According to the settlement motion, about 1.5 million consumers could receive cash payments and extended warranty coverage. The motion is under consideration for approval in New Jersey court.

Under the terms of the settlement, LG would make cash payments to about 1.55 million consumers in the Settlement Class.

Class Members are able to receive payments for reimbursement of parts and labor costs in addition to property loss, such as food or medicine spoiled due to the LG Electronics refrigerators not cooling the items, according to the settlement terms.

LG will also compensate Class Members for unsuccessful or delayed repairs, or the cost of replacing the refrigerator.

If affected consumers are able to document their claims, they could be eligible for up to several thousand dollars, the settlement says. Those who provide attestation but not documentation may be eligible to recover up to $450.

There is no cap on the payments.

Class Members also will receive an extended warranty that will cover the full repair cost for cooling failures in the LG Electronics refrigerators and related property loss for five years from the date the appliance was purchased, the class action settlement says.

To bolster this warranty service, LG has also agreed to employ more technicians and put a dedicated team in place to address the cooling failures, the class action settlement claims. LG will also develop more reliable replacement parts.

Attorneys’ fees and costs are subject to Court approval and will be paid separately. Those awards will not reduce settlement benefits.

The Settlement Class includes anyone in the U.S. who bought one of the covered models of LG Electronics refrigerators produced between Jan. 1, 2014 and Dec. 31, 2017.

Consumers who previously released claims in favor of LG, those who purchased refrigerators manufactured after Dec. 31, 2017, and those who bought Kenmore refrigerators from Sears are not eligible to be included in the Class, according to the class action settlement.

Also excluded are consumers who bought LG refrigerator models of which fewer than 1,000 units were sold “or for which the service rate for No-Cooling Events was less than 1% of sales,” the settlement says.

Plaintiff Michael Bentley’s class action lawsuit was consolidated with other similar complaints dealing with the allegedly defective LG Electronics refrigerators.

According to Bentley’s complaint, he had purchased an LG Kenmore refrigerator for about $1,500 from a Michigan Sears in 2015, after seeing ads touting the appliance as high quality and fully functional.

Bentley said he received additional information about the refrigerator and its compressor in the form of brochures and owners’ manuals, but did not see any disclosures that the compressor was defective or prone to failure.

Bentely’s Kenmore refrigerator failed because of the compressor defect in September 2018, the complaint says. It allegedly would not stay cool and spoiled his food.

He requested repairs through Sears, and although he was told the repairs would be covered under the warranty, he was charged $100 to diagnose the issue. He says he was ultimately charged $700 for a replacement compressor.

But the refrigerator failed from the compressor defect again on March 20, 2019, according to the complaint. Again, the repairs — this time completed by a local repair shop — cost about $750, and the repair technician allegedly informed him that he was “wasting money on repairs because the refrigerator would likely fail again from the same problem.”

Bentley says he replaced the refrigerator with a General Electric model in April 2019.

Had he known the LG refrigerator was defective he would not have bought it, would have paid a different price or would have returned it, the class action lawsuit says.

The plaintiffs claimed the linear compressors in their LG Electronics refrigerators were defective and prone to failure, causing them to be unable to cool their contents.

The class action lawsuit also alleged that LG had long known about the defective compressors after many consumers and LG-authorized repair technicians reported the failures to the company.

However, LG has “vigorously disputed Plaintiffs’ allegations,” according to the settlement motion.

A final approval hearing on the settlement motion has yet to be scheduled.

My LG refrigerator model number is on this list. But it was built in November 2018, therefore not eligible for this class action suit. Within the 1st year two main computer boards were replaced because the error code was E…rf. Now in the 2nd year another main computer board was replaced then last month the error code was E…CL. The LG repairman told us “the main computer board needs a software update. CL means communication error.” After he leaves the error of CL returned. He called LG they inform him CL means compressor leak. Parts have been ordered. QUESTION: Is there any help for the owners of refrigerators built after September 2017.

My compressor on my lg french door purchased 10- 22- 2018 and manufactured 7-2018 went bad 2 months ago and i had to pay 600$ to have it fixed 1 month after the 5 years. I would also like to know if there’s a new class class action lawsuit or where i can start one. Or what lawyer was involved in the first one so i can ask them if we can file another one.

LG has been the leading brand that we have purchased for our family home for over two decades. It is disappointing and costly to my family and our tight budget that such a reputable company knew about the defective compressors after customers complained and LG Technicians reported these issues to the company. This incident cost my family, not only with the purchase of a new refrigerator but also with the spoiled food when we returned home from a short getaway. Please add me to this settlement.

My compressor just went out two days ago on my 2015 LG French door fridge and spoiled About $500 worth of food. Unfortunately, My model number isn’t on the list even though my serial number is within the range that were recalled. I’m assuming that all fridges in that range use the same compressor. What bullshit. I’ll never by an LG product again as they obviously don’t stand by their products.

I purchased a Kenmore Elite in Sept. 4th 2016, delivered on the 30th of September. My refrigerator when out at the end of Sept. of 2020. I called the Sears customers service, the majority of the CS reps are in the Philippines, I stayed on hold for over 2hrs on a Saturday. That was after leaving Sears Appliance Store in Goodyear Az, because the store that I purchased the Kenmore Elite was no longer opened in Surprise Az. The Goodyear Agent in the store was the only one there with 4 people were ahead of me. My main goal was to obtained information regarding the purchase of a contract, because I had two separate charges for the same store of 217.00, I believe it was a extended warranty for the refrigerator, but it was never found, only the purchase of the refig. Anyhow, I did get an appointment early October, but the service tech was so rude and told me that it would be $540.45. All he did was look into the refrigerator and read the model number. I questioned how he would know that if he has even pulled the refrigerator out to do any diagnostic. He started to scream to the top of his lungs. He was out, I called to schedule another appointment and it took over 4 weeks to get another appointment. Also, after a few facts checks, I found that this has been problem for LG since 2005, but when you have no protection companies can do all underhanded things to consumer. This has been repackage in many ways and sold in outlet stores, as well as appliance stores. I also understand that the outlet stores are now called American Freight and they are still selling these refig as well as other faulty products. How is that possible??? I lost over 800 dollars of food, paid 600.00 in labor charges. I have three disable people who are residents in my home, we all have medications that needed to be refrigerated, one cost 3,000.00. We are in a middle of a pandemic and LG as well as Sears ( American Freight) are getting over, they need to be shut down both companies… If I dress up as a clown does that mean that when I take off the clown suit, I am a different person when I take it off. LG and Kenmore has the same linear compressor that sits in the back of the refrigerator, quit allowing them to hide behind an exterior. I am all in and I am wondering how many deaths may have been cause by this nonsense. My e-mail is peaceofmind20042005@msn.com Jeannine B

Please include me. Have a Kenmore LG and it is terrible. Lost all the food in the refrigerator three times now. Purchased and extended warranty, and the website doesn’t exist for it anymore. Wait time on hold for customer service is 3hours +. Took 10 days for a technician to come. They canceled the appointment without telling us. Trying again because it is broken again. Extended warranty is garbage. Fridge is garbage. Why is Kenmore excluded? It is same fridge.

  6. Frank G Seidl Jr says:

Purchased LG side by side in October 2018. Had repairman out in September 2019 because freezer stopped working for 48-72 hours but started working again before he showed up. Did some diagnostics. Since then my ice maker has stopped working on several occasions in the past few months. I would shut off or unplug it to try to reset and usually works but this should not be happening with less than 2 year old fridge. Life’s Good my ass ! Need to change that slogan

My refrigerator doesn’t work that good what do I do

  7. Bert M says:

Purchased a Kenmore 795.73153.610 in 2017. Just had the compressor replaced by Sears repair under warranty. Labor was $450. Is there a seperate Kenmore branded LG classaction suit in the works? These are LG refrigerators with the exact same failing compressors.

  8. Janet Piediscalzo says:

My story is exactly like previous posts. I purchased a Kenmore Elite refrigerator in 9/2017 for $2000. I honestly love it but it stopped cooling a week ago. Lost food. Sears service tech came out. Said it’s the compressor, talked about the class action suit . He stayed we can replace the compressor with another , more than likely LG compressor that will more than likely go out too. Labor $600. He advised to throw it away and go buy a new one . Easy said when it’s not out of his pocket. I don’t quite understand why the lawsuit was established by a gentleman whose Kenmore refrigerator with a Defective LG compressor went out, but yet the class action suit does not include Kenmore Refeigerators. I would like to be in the class action suit. Maybe another suit needs to be started to cover other brand refrigerators that have LG compressors as well

  9. Theresa Alfaro says:

Kenmore/LG side-by-side refrigerator model 795.51839.412 barely 2 years old, produced 7/18, that I brought NEW from Sears – now broken?. Bad compressor! 4 weeks and still no available appointments for the repair! Unacceptable for an essential household item. I paid a technician to come out but Sears requires their own Tech to diagnose. Appointment over 30 days out. Lost food, wages-from no show appointment, money paid to diagnose problem, and money spent for a mini fridge. Any suggestions???
