Allstate Insurance Company has filed a lawsuit against LG Electronics USA, Inc claiming a defective washing machine flooded, causing nearly $100,000 in damage to an Alabama home.

Allstate claims that the company knew it was selling a defective and dangerous product when homeowner and insurance policy holder Burt Newsome purchased an LG washing machine.

The insurance company’s lawsuit alleges that on February 20, 2020, Newsom’s home was damaged by “a sudden and uncontrolled discharge of water” from the LG washing machine.

As a result, homeowner Newsom was forced to pay a $3,000 deductible to clean up and repair the damage caused by the flood. Allstate says that it was forced to cover the rest of the damages under its insurance policy with Newsom.

The leak was allegedly caused by a defect in the control board of the LG washer. Allstate says that the defect was sold by LG in “an unreasonably dangerous” and “defective” condition.

The LG washing machine with the allegedly defective parts is model WM2487HRMA and other consumers have reported issues with the appliance as well.

“This is a terrible washer. It shakes and squeals like crazy,” states one review on the retail website Amazon which also claims the appliance damaged the homeowner’s wood flooring.

Indeed, LG has faced legal action brought by consumers complaining of a number of defects. In 2017, consumers filed a class action lawsuit alleging a “water hammering” defect caused by a washer valve that closed too fast resulting in annoying knocking noises in their pipes, as well as damage and water leakage.

Earlier in 2016, LG agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging the company sold washing machines that were prone to mold and foul odors.

Allstate claims that LG was aware of the defect when they sold the washing machine to Newsom. The insurer accuses LG of negligence, failure to warn, breach of warranty, and violating Alabama consumer protection law.

The insurance company wants LG to pay them $99,005.48 to cover repairs and damages caused by the allegedly defective washing machine, along with attorney costs and court fees.

My wife & I started getting sticky brown flakes all over our LG top loading washing machine (model WT7150C) drum & clothes soon after the 1 year warranty expired. It’s very sticky & very hard to get off of clothes. A repair man extracted the impeller plate & we saw that it too was full of this sludge which was mostly trapped within the 2 layers of the plate. Cleaning the machine regularly for the 1st year we had it; then many times over & over after that couldn’t purge the plate of all the gunk. We see no point in a replacement cap & plate if the cause isn’t fixed. Water remains in the bottom of he drum, so maybe the pump which is supposed to expell it is defective as others have mentioned. We don’t know. We had been impressed & excited to read how well rated this machine was but now know better than to believe any ratings. We’ve had to go to laundromats for weeks & the experience has been stressful. LG will do nothing for us- not even take the washer away. So, we won’t buy LG ever again.

On April 6th, 2023, our LG washing machine located on the second floor of our home caused over $40,000 in water damage, top to bottom. We just finished the water mitigation and are hoping to begin the rebuild soon.

Im glad we found this article and I’m really looking forward to taking down LG Electronics. The overwhelmingly amounts of stress it has placed on myself and family will not go unheard. Honesty is everything and LG has FAILED in that department.

My LG washer purchased 11-11-2017 model # WT7200CW. Serial # 709VWYK0A394. This washer consistently has dark particles that get all over my clothes. I have used several tub cleansers but I still have problems. During my 3 year extra warranty I had several calls to repair the problem. The repair person said this washer has this problem and said to use tub cleaners and tablets. They do not work. I have to leave the lid open on the top loading washer as it smells bad if the lid is shut. If we are gone several days and I do laundry the dirty particles on clothes are even worse. I have to shake my clothes and the particles off before I put in them in the dryer. I was advised that LG washers were the best but I sure got a lemon. I talked to a LG supervisor Oct 2021 but she could not help me as the 3 year warranty that I bought extra was out. I explained every since I bought the washer there has been problems No help from LG. Can you do anything about this for me? Thank you

    1. Susan says:

I have this problem too!! PC Richard sent a repair person because I have an extended warranty. Told me this is not covered. He gave us tips on how to take the washer apart to clean it. We did this. It took hours. My husband is handy so we watched a YouTube video. Now six months later the brown flakes are back. The water flow is not strong enough to flush out the water so there is always water in the bottom of the machine under the drum. LG is of no help. They offered me 20% off a new washer after going back and forth for hours. If you go to their LG global Facebook page you will see many bad reviews and unhappy customers.

    1. Lynette says:

Did anyone ever help u with this issue?

  9. Genesis Tymes says:

WOW!! Please add me to this case. This happened to me on April 28, 2022. This is the 2nd time this washer has caused water damage to my house. My insurance company cover the damage to the tune of $21,000 dollars. I reached out to Sear to have my washer replaced but was told that it was not covered because it was a mechanical problem. I have been washing clothes at the laundrymat since April and must continue until I can afford to pay for a new washer… oh yeah the Laundrymat cost 50 a week..

  10. Lynn Murray says:

This just happened to us over the weekend. We got an error message (FE) and the washer filled with non stop water, even after turning the machine off. This happened late at night when we were sleeping. We woke to our kitchen, dinning room, front living room, den and master bedroom filled with at least 3 inches of water in our home. We had to shut off the main water to the house to get it to stop. It looks like all of our wooden floors downstairs are ruined (which is around 90% of the downstairs flooring), along with all our oriental rugs. Luckily we were able to get our furniture moved before it was damaged. Very shocking!!
