Allstate Insurance Company has filed a lawsuit against LG Electronics USA, Inc claiming a defective washing machine flooded, causing nearly $100,000 in damage to an Alabama home.

Allstate claims that the company knew it was selling a defective and dangerous product when homeowner and insurance policy holder Burt Newsome purchased an LG washing machine.

The insurance company’s lawsuit alleges that on February 20, 2020, Newsom’s home was damaged by “a sudden and uncontrolled discharge of water” from the LG washing machine.

As a result, homeowner Newsom was forced to pay a $3,000 deductible to clean up and repair the damage caused by the flood. Allstate says that it was forced to cover the rest of the damages under its insurance policy with Newsom.

The leak was allegedly caused by a defect in the control board of the LG washer. Allstate says that the defect was sold by LG in “an unreasonably dangerous” and “defective” condition.

The LG washing machine with the allegedly defective parts is model WM2487HRMA and other consumers have reported issues with the appliance as well.

“This is a terrible washer. It shakes and squeals like crazy,” states one review on the retail website Amazon which also claims the appliance damaged the homeowner’s wood flooring.

Indeed, LG has faced legal action brought by consumers complaining of a number of defects. In 2017, consumers filed a class action lawsuit alleging a “water hammering” defect caused by a washer valve that closed too fast resulting in annoying knocking noises in their pipes, as well as damage and water leakage.

Earlier in 2016, LG agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging the company sold washing machines that were prone to mold and foul odors.

Allstate claims that LG was aware of the defect when they sold the washing machine to Newsom. The insurer accuses LG of negligence, failure to warn, breach of warranty, and violating Alabama consumer protection law.

The insurance company wants LG to pay them $99,005.48 to cover repairs and damages caused by the allegedly defective washing machine, along with attorney costs and court fees.

I googled the washer model number above and I have same exact washer. Same wild cherry color. Have had issues since October 2020 til 2 weeks ago. Hopefully the issues are fixed. It’s not level now but hopefully I can fix that myself. I have had repair people out so often on this washer that they voided my extended warranty. Because they were inept at repairing it the first time. I bought it from jcp in July of 2018.

I have always thought LG to be the best, until I got my front loader washer and dryer. The leaking water is constant and the smell is horrible. I will never buy this brand again.

I have a WM3500CW that bangs and shakes like crazy during wash. A technician came out and said it is perfectly level and is operating fine and said not to overload the machine, but it does it with any size load. My manufacturers warranty is almost up so I will be purchasing the extended warranty for when it inevitably breaks and/or floods. Even the technician said that model is notorious for leaking, and a couple weeks back I had an inexplicable puddle on the floor but could not figure out where it came from and haven’t had any issues since. I hate this washer and would definitely not buy a front load again for many reasons. I do the routine monthly tub cleans and drain the water, clean around the gaskets, etc etc and it still smells musty to the point I have to do a second or third rinse to make sure my clothes do not smell.

I have had this same knocking. They came out replaced the tub. Said it was the bearings. Then it still made the noise. They came out said it was the springs. Replaced those. Still made the noise They came out said it wasn’t level. Leveled it. Still made the noise. Next guy comes out and finds that the counterweight had came loose and was bouncing around when the washing was spinning. It was broke it half at that point. It took them from October 2020 til 2 weeks ago to get it fixed. The last guy told me they don’t tighten the bolts on the counterweights at the manufacturer and they shake loose. Have your warranty people check it out. They voided my extended warranty because they said all my repairs cost more than I paid for my washer. I was penalized for their stupid unneeded repair costs.

We had a similar problem with model WM0642HW / 01. The sensor for the water shut off failed so once the was cycle ended the water kept running. Since the washer thought the cycle ended the door unlocked. The water pressure behind the door caused it to open and pour gallons of water into our house. We ended up filing an insurance claim since the hardwood floors in our kitchen were damaged from this and the stand up freezer in our basement destroyed. Not a fun experience for sure.
