Allstate Insurance Company has filed a lawsuit against LG Electronics USA, Inc claiming a defective washing machine flooded, causing nearly $100,000 in damage to an Alabama home.

Allstate claims that the company knew it was selling a defective and dangerous product when homeowner and insurance policy holder Burt Newsome purchased an LG washing machine.

The insurance company’s lawsuit alleges that on February 20, 2020, Newsom’s home was damaged by “a sudden and uncontrolled discharge of water” from the LG washing machine.

As a result, homeowner Newsom was forced to pay a $3,000 deductible to clean up and repair the damage caused by the flood. Allstate says that it was forced to cover the rest of the damages under its insurance policy with Newsom.

The leak was allegedly caused by a defect in the control board of the LG washer. Allstate says that the defect was sold by LG in “an unreasonably dangerous” and “defective” condition.

The LG washing machine with the allegedly defective parts is model WM2487HRMA and other consumers have reported issues with the appliance as well.

“This is a terrible washer. It shakes and squeals like crazy,” states one review on the retail website Amazon which also claims the appliance damaged the homeowner’s wood flooring.

Indeed, LG has faced legal action brought by consumers complaining of a number of defects. In 2017, consumers filed a class action lawsuit alleging a “water hammering” defect caused by a washer valve that closed too fast resulting in annoying knocking noises in their pipes, as well as damage and water leakage.

Earlier in 2016, LG agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging the company sold washing machines that were prone to mold and foul odors.

Allstate claims that LG was aware of the defect when they sold the washing machine to Newsom. The insurer accuses LG of negligence, failure to warn, breach of warranty, and violating Alabama consumer protection law.

The insurance company wants LG to pay them $99,005.48 to cover repairs and damages caused by the allegedly defective washing machine, along with attorney costs and court fees.

We have this set and it’s junk. (Model # WM2487HRMA) We have replaced the “spider” in the washer that supports the tub because it cracked in two places. Why did it crack? Because it was made of made of cheap plastic. The dryer rattles constantly, and we tried and tried to level it…Now, the bearings went bad on the washer, so we replaced this. Now, the whole plastic tub is punctured, from what? Who knows? Will never buy an LG product again. We have a dishwasher that is a LG and the heating unit to dry the dishes has almost burned up my kitchen and I am afraid to use it now. Never again.

  2. Ellen Daigle says:

The LG washing machine we had was so awful, didn’t clean, made loud noises, vibrated so intensely, I thought it was just off balance.
    I stopped using it

  3. Billy James says:

Horrible machine. Over $365 to repair defective “Magnets” mold, leaks…where does it end?

  4. Brianna Becker says:

I too had an LG washer flood my house in January 2019. I called LG with the issue and was told to get estimates done and submit them for a claim. I asked the representative what I should do with the washer and he told me I could get rid of it. After submitting all the information they asked for they then asked me for the repair company to send them a statement of the defect. I explained they never asked me to have someone come out and look at it or repair it. I had already given it away. They refused to admit to their mistake and I had to track the washer down and get it back. Then LG made me pay to have someone come out and diagnose the washer, then made me pay to have the repair company back out to remove the defective part and then pay to ship it to them. At this point, I am already out of pocket for a new washer and dryer & the cost to dry out my house. Now they want me to pay more out of pocket to diagnose the problem. I finally got tired of the constant run-around and lack of communication with LG and contacted my insurance company. I handed all of my information and conversations over to them to fight with LG on my behalf. Since I could not afford to continue fighting with them since it was costing more out of pocket than I could afford. My insurance company settled with LG for less than it cost me out of pocket to clean up and repair the damages, much less the cost of having to purchase a new washer and dryer since I was afraid to use them after that. So not only did I have to pay out of pocket for all of this but I had to pay to have my house dried out, cleaned, and then repaired out of pocket. The only thing my insurance company paid for was to replace the damaged hardwood flooring and didn’t even pay for all the damaged flooring only the hardwood. I had 2 bedrooms with carpet that were ruined and 2 rooms with linoleum flooring ruined, which they did not pay to replace. Much less having to pull out the baseboards and replace them as well. They said LG should pay me for all the out-of-pocket expenses and the other ruined floors. The insurance then settles with LG for less than my deductible, much less out-of-pocket expenses, and damages. I did not agree to any of this settlement, they did this without speaking to me, or even correcting the missing receipts they did not add in to their demand. LG still owes me over $10,000.00 for damages, out-of-pocket expenses, and for the time I wasted fighting LG for a year.

I actually still have this defective washer in my garage due to the fact I was never paid for all of the damages.

      1. E Meehan says:

You should call the attorneys for Allstate and tell them you are dissatisfied and will pursue settlement further adding the emotional stress, lack of use etc., to the claim. Insurance companies do not like unresolved cases that cost more money to settle.

  10. Stacey Rivera says:

Please add me. I have tried everything to get the smell out…washing everything down before each load of clothes. It’s disgusting ?
We had our LG dryer fixed months ago and the repairman said that there’s an issue on the washer with the lid loosening and flinging off.
