Allstate Insurance Company has filed a lawsuit against LG Electronics USA, Inc claiming a defective washing machine flooded, causing nearly $100,000 in damage to an Alabama home.

Allstate claims that the company knew it was selling a defective and dangerous product when homeowner and insurance policy holder Burt Newsome purchased an LG washing machine.

The insurance company’s lawsuit alleges that on February 20, 2020, Newsom’s home was damaged by “a sudden and uncontrolled discharge of water” from the LG washing machine.

As a result, homeowner Newsom was forced to pay a $3,000 deductible to clean up and repair the damage caused by the flood. Allstate says that it was forced to cover the rest of the damages under its insurance policy with Newsom.

The leak was allegedly caused by a defect in the control board of the LG washer. Allstate says that the defect was sold by LG in “an unreasonably dangerous” and “defective” condition.

The LG washing machine with the allegedly defective parts is model WM2487HRMA and other consumers have reported issues with the appliance as well.

“This is a terrible washer. It shakes and squeals like crazy,” states one review on the retail website Amazon which also claims the appliance damaged the homeowner’s wood flooring.

Indeed, LG has faced legal action brought by consumers complaining of a number of defects. In 2017, consumers filed a class action lawsuit alleging a “water hammering” defect caused by a washer valve that closed too fast resulting in annoying knocking noises in their pipes, as well as damage and water leakage.

Earlier in 2016, LG agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging the company sold washing machines that were prone to mold and foul odors.

Allstate claims that LG was aware of the defect when they sold the washing machine to Newsom. The insurer accuses LG of negligence, failure to warn, breach of warranty, and violating Alabama consumer protection law.

The insurance company wants LG to pay them $99,005.48 to cover repairs and damages caused by the allegedly defective washing machine, along with attorney costs and court fees.

Please add me to the lawsuit. I bought my 85 year old mom the LG washer dryer set in Sept 2021 and she started having trouble with excessive shaking of the washer and rust which has ruined a lot of her clothes. The only thing LG suggested was to do the Tub clean cycle, which does absolutely nothing to fix a malfunctioned device that’s obviously a manufacturing defect.

  2. Brian says:

Yes this just happened to me. I just opened a claim and have a $5000 deductible. About 4000SF of flooring and laundry room cabinets need to be replaced!

  3. Karen Halliday says:

I bought a new LG turbo top load washer in January 2022. I had called for service 3 times. Well the last time just before tech was coming out the washer gave way and water went all over my house causing over $10,000 worth of damage. I keep getting the run around and they only wanted to pay $3500.00. My house has so much water damage its not funny. My home is only 10 years old.

  4. Christine says:

My LG washer dryer combo had an error message (FE) and filled with non stop water, even after turning the machine off. The machine leaked out into my kitchen and damaged part of the living room rug. I had to shut off the water valves and the manual did not instruct me to do this. If the manual would have said to shut off all water, maybe my rug could have been salvaged. Also, the plastic door to my machine cracked on the inside. I have to get it fixed today.

    I recommend Speed Queen washers/dryers. They’re industry-proven to last 15-25 years!

  6. Tamara says:

Please add me. I have to spray my machine with mold and mildew cleaner after my last wash & keep the door open until
it dries. Mold on the rubber seal requires cleaning before every washing Unfortunately I am I o position to buy another’ $700 00 washer

  7. Doug thayer says:

I have a wm3700h lg washing machine I live in a two store house and my washing machine is on the second level the washing machine just leaked so much water it was coming out of my light fixture on the first floor. Having someone come out to give a estimate on how much that is going to cost, called my policy and my deductible is 4K so that sucks

  8. Will Hamielec says:

Please add me, we have two lg washers, which have each had gallons of water pour out the front door. The most recent one caused damage

  9. winston huey says:

We had an LG washing machine, it leaks and would not completely discharge the water. So it smells

  10. Edna M Anderson says:

Add me my LG frequently just shuts itself off and has to be restarted mid cycle you never know until you recheck your laundry if it’s done at all.
