Consumer reports of burning smells, flames, and smoke emanating from Cove Appliance dishwashers have led to a recall of more than 40,000 units sold in the United States.
On Wednesday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the nationwide recall notice on the Cove Appliance 24-inch built-in dishwashers. The hearing element in the recalled dishwashers can fail to shut off. This can cause the Cove Appliance to overheat, posing a fire hazard, warned the agency.
Cove Appliance, the newest company acquired by Sub-Zero which also runs the high-end oven company Wolf, reports that approximately 40,650 recalled dishwashers were sold in the US, with another 1,350 units sold in Canada and 250 sold in Mexico. Affected models include the DW2450 and DW2450WS, says the company’s website.
“The recalled dishwashers have serial numbers 20000100 through 20044445. The model number, serial number and date code are printed on the product rating plate located inside the dishwasher. ‘Cove’ is printed on the outside of the door and on the far right side of the control panel, located on the top of the unit’s door,” says the CPSC recall notice.
The recalled Cove Appliance dishwashers were sold between February 2018 and May 2021 for between $2,400 and $2,500 at various home appliance stores nationwide.
The CPSC says consumers should immediately stop using the recalled dishwasher and unplug it or switch off the breaker. Consumers can schedule a free repair through Cove Appliance. The company will replace the heating element and equip the dishwasher with a second thermal protection device.
To schedule a repair, consumers should contact Cove Appliance at 888-651-9376 or by email.
Defective dishwashers have prompted class action lawsuits against major manufacturers, including Electrolux and Whirlpool, by consumers claiming that smoke and water emanating from the appliances have resulted in serious damage to their homes.
No class action lawsuits have been filed over the recalled Cove Appliance dishwashers yet, but Top Class Actions will continue to update consumers on this and other product safety recalls.
