Ford Trucks, SUVs Windshield Wipers Recall Overview:
- Who: Ford has recalled over 650,000 trucks and SUVs, including certain Ford F-150, Ford Expedition, Ford F-Super duty and Lincoln Navigator vehicles.
- Why: The recall was initiated over concerns the vehicles’ windshield wipers were manufactured with defective wiper arms.
- Where: The recall is nationwide.
Ford has recalled more than 650,000 of its vehicles over concerns they contain windshield wipers with defective wiper arms.
The recall affects 2020-2021 Ford F-150, 2020-2021 Ford Expedition, 2020-2022 Ford F-Super duty vehicles — including the F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 — and the 2020-2021 Lincoln Navigator, according to a recall notice published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Apr. 14.
Ford says the recalled vehicles contain windshield wipers “equipped with suspect wiper arm head spline teeth that were produced out of design specification and with higher torque wiper motors.”
The problem, according to the Ford recall, is due to an “insufficient spline tooth height” that Ford says can “cause the arm attachment to strip” when it is used with “certain wiper motors with higher torque.”
The issue can cause the windshield wiper arms on the Ford trucks and SUVs to “become inoperable and/or potentially detach from the vehicle,” according to the Ford recall.
Ford says having a windshield wiper arm that does not function properly can increase the risk of a crash due to a resulting “reduced visibility in certain conditions.”
A warning sign for drivers that a malfunction with the windshield wipers is occurring is if the driver or passenger wiper arm begins having an “erratic or slow wipe speed,” according to the Ford recall.
Ford Will Replace Recalled Windshield Wipers Free Of Charge
Ford says it will notify vehicle owners by mail and instruct them to take their trucks and SUVs into either a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have both of the front windshield wiper arms replaced free of charge.
The replacement wiper arms were “produced with wiper arm splines within specification,” according to the Ford recall.
Ford says it has already provided a general reimbursement plan for vehicle owners who paid out-of-pocket to have repairs done prior to a safety recall in May 2021. It estimates that the final date to be eligible for reimbursement will be June 6 and says it will forward “a copy of the notification letters to dealers to the agency when available.”
Ford and Lincoln dealers are expected to begin being notified about the recall on Apr. 19 while notification letters to vehicle owners are expected to begin May 23 and be completed by May 27, according to the Ford recall.
Ford also recently recalled a select number of 2020-2022 Ford Explorer vehicles over concerns they contain rear axle mounting bolts which can fracture when the vehicle accelerates, Ford Authority reports.
The fractured rear axle mounting bolt can cause anything from a severe noise or vibration to a loss of transmission torque, which allows the vehicle to stay in a parked position.
Ford says it has not received any reports of injury or accidents related to the recall, Ford Authority reports.
Earlier this month, a class action lawsuit alleging Ford’s Mustang, Explorer and Expedition vehicles contain aluminum panels that corrode and rust was denied class action certification by a Florida federal judge.
