Rep. Santos fraud charges overview: 

  • Who: Ten additional charges have been filed against U.S. Rep. George Santos, bringing his total indictment count to 23. 
  • Why: Santos has been accused of seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering and two counts of aggravated identity theft, among other things. 
  • Where: The case is in front of a New York federal court. 

U.S. Rep. George Santos has been charged in a New York federal court with lying to election officials and stealing both the personal identities and financial information of individuals who were donors to his campaign. 

The charges against Santos, a Republican representing New York’s 3rd Congressional District, have been added onto a 13-count indictment as part of an ongoing fraud case, Law360 reports.

In addition to the latest charges, Santos has reportedly been accused of defrauding campaign donors, obtaining fraudulent unemployment benefits and lying on financial disclosures made to the House of Representatives. 

A total of 10 new charges were filed against Santos, including claims he made unauthorized charges to the credit cards of his donors, according to Law360. 

“As alleged, Santos is charged with stealing people’s identities and making charges on his own donors’ credit cards without their authorization,” Bryon Peace, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a statement

Santos faces 23 charges, including 7 counts of wire fraud, 3 counts of money laundering

Santos is now facing a total of 23 charges, which also include allegedly making materially false statements to the Federal Election Commission and two counts of falsifying records to obstruct the commission. 

The embattled representative is also facing two counts of aggravated identity theft, one count of device fraud, seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds and two counts of making materially false statements to the House. 

This Office will relentlessly pursue criminal charges against anyone who uses the electoral process as an opportunity to defraud the public and our government institutions,” Peace said in a statement. 

Santos was elected to Congress in November 2022 and sworn into his position as representative for New York’s 3rd Congressional District on Jan. 7. 

In other news involving the GOP, Republican leaders expressed concern last month that the new Huawei smartphone may be able to access U.S. 5G technology.
