Hands folded in prayer over an open bibleThe latest news in the Catholic Church abuse scandal includes a 14-year prison sentence for a Pennsylvania priest who was accused of molesting two boys. The Catholic Church sex scandal has had far-reaching implications not just in Pennsylvania but across the country as more men have come forward to report being molested, assaulted, or sexually abused as young men inside the Catholic Church.

The latest priest targeted, charged, and convicted in the Catholic Church scandal has apologized for the actions he committed and stated that they were both sins as well as criminal, according to NBC News.

The sentence for that priest in the Catholic Church sexual abuse scandal case requires at least two years and six months and as long as 14 years. According to the Pennsylvania Attorney General sharing details about this case in the Catholic Church abuse scandal, the young men targeted by this priest were from 8 to 15 years old at the time of the molestation.

One of those victims was allegedly molested and assaulted more than 20 times in church rectories. That victim was also required to go to confession and to confess the abuse to the same priest. The Pennsylvania Attorney General shared that the tools of the priesthood were used to conceal the actions and the associated abuse.

One of the victims of that Catholic Church abuse scandal who was directly assaulted by the Pennsylvania priest who was charged says that his life was significantly changed as a result of what happened to him as a young boy. He says that he has suffered for many years from mental anguish and has had his marriage suffer, as well as his career.

This church official was named in the Catholic Church priest abuse scandal as one of 301 priests in Pennsylvania accused of abusing more than 1,000 female and male victims.

Since these assaults in the Catholic Church assault scandal occurred between 2002 and 2010, prosecution was not barred by the statute of limitations. According to victims of the Catholic Church abuse, the diocese of Erie, Pa. knew as early as 2010 that this particular priest was a predator but failed to take any action to address it.

The church abuse scandal was detailed in a grand jury report released in mid-August documenting sexual abuse that was carried out over 70 years. An interview with the Pennsylvania Attorney General details that 45 other states are planning to pursue the Catholic Church for documentation about the abuse that might have been carried out by priests.

When the report in Pennsylvania came out, other states were encouraged to investigate the issue in order to determine how many priests and victims might have been impacted. Pennsylvania victims are still coming forward, with many of them claiming that the church had notice about the abuse issues but chose to cover them up.
