Tesla camera recordings report overview:

  • Who: A newly released Reuters report revealed groups of Tesla employees privately shared images and videos taken by cameras equipped in Tesla vehicles.
  • Why: Nine former Tesla employees reportedly spoke with Reuters about the alleged video and images — including ones that showed vehicle owners in embarrassing situations — they say occurred between 2019 and 2022.
  • Where: Tesla vehicles are owned by consumers nationwide.

Groups of Tesla employees, from between 2019 and 2022, privately shared videos and images recorded by cameras built into the company’s vehicles, according to a newly released Reuters report.

The Tesla employees reportedly used an internal messaging system to share the videos and images, including ones Reuters described as being “highly invasive.”

Tesla says it equips its vehicles with cameras to help assist with driving, while reassuring drivers via its Customer Privacy Notice that the devices are “designed from the ground up to protect your privacy” and that recordings remain anonymous and are not linked to you or your vehicle.”

In order for camera recordings for fleet learning to be shared with Tesla, your consent for Data Sharing is required and can be controlled through the vehicle’s touchscreen at any time,” Tesla says in the privacy notice.

Despite this, nine former Tesla workers reportedly told Reuters employees shared the cameras’ videos and images, including ones they claim caught drivers in embarrassing situations.

Employees shared video of child flying off bike after being struck by Tesla vehicle, report says

Tesla employees also shared images and videos showing road rage incidents and crashes, including a 2021 accident in which a child riding a bike was hit by a Tesla driving at a high speed through a residential area, Reuters reports.

A former Tesla employee reportedly described the video, which they said saw the child fly in an opposite direction than the bike, spreading through a San Mateo, California Tesla office “like wildfire.”

Concern was also raised about the possibility of Tesla workers being able to determine the home address of a vehicle owner, with former employees disclosing the computer program used to view recordings could tell them where they originated, Reuters reports.

Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk did not respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

A consumer filed an antitrust class action lawsuit against Tesla last month, arguing the automaker has monopolized the market for access to repair services and proper replacement parts for Tesla vehicles
