Rite Aid has disclosed that it suffered a major data breach in May that the drugstore chain says may have compromised the personal information of its customers.
The company said files containing a limited amount of protected health information — such as full names, birthdates, and prescription information, among other things — were exposed in the data breach, reports NBC24 News.
Rite Aid said it was notified on May 31 by a vendor partner about a vulnerability in its software that had been exploited by an unknown third party.
While the vendor partner provided a software update to fix the vulnerability, it was discovered during a review of Rite Aid’s software and systems that an unknown third party had accessed certain company files on May 26, reports NBC24 News.
Rite Aid says no Social Security numbers or financial information exposed in May data breach
Rite Aid has reassured its customers that no Social Security numbers or financial information — such as credit card numbers — were exposed during the data breach.
The company said it sent notification letters to affected customers on July 20, and that it has set up a dedicated assistance line at 866-373-9712 for those who did not receive a letter about the data breach, but want to know if they were impacted, reports NBC24 News.
Rite Aid said it regrets the data breach happened, and that, upon discovering the incident, immediately reported it to law enforcement and federal and state regulators.
A class action lawsuit was filed against Rite Aid in March by an investor arguing the company has been making misleading statements in annual reports filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission since 2018.
Rite Aid is accused of failing to disclose in the annual reports that the company was “at higher risk of regulatory action and possible prosecution as a result of systematically and improperly filling unnecessary prescriptions.”
In other data breach news, HCA Healthcare announced earlier this month that it suffered a data breach it said compromised the contact information of an undisclosed number of its patients.
