Planned Parenthood data breach overview:
- Who: Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles suffered a data hack in October.
- Why: The organization notified affected patients that their information was compromised in the data breach this week.
- Where: The breach occurred at the Los Angeles branch.
Planned Parenthood’s Los Angeles Branch (PPLA) is the latest victim of a data breach that exposed sensitive patient information.
In letters to those whose information was compromised, PPLA says that on Oct. 17, it identified suspicious activity on its computer network. The organization claims it immediately took its systems offline, notified law enforcement, and engaged a third-party cybersecurity firm to assist in an investigation of the data breach.
“The investigation determined that an unauthorized person gained access to our network between October 9, 2021, and October 17, 2021, and exfiltrated some files from our systems during that time,” the letter states.
PPLA determined the hackers gained access to files containing patients’ names, addresses, insurance information and dates of birth, as well as clinical information such as diagnosis, procedure and/or prescription information.
“At this time, we have no evidence that any information involved in this incident has been used for fraudulent purposes,” PPLA says in the letter. “However, in an abundance of caution, we wanted to notify you of this incident and assure you that we take this very seriously. It is always a good idea to review statements you receive from your health insurer and health care providers.”
If you are a Planned Parenthood client and see charges for services you did not receive, please call your insurer or provider immediately, warned PPLA.
Planned Parenthood Los Angeles says it will take steps to enhance security measures
“We have and will continue to take steps to enhance our existing security measures and to help
protect the information in our care, including increasing our network monitoring, engaging an external cybersecurity firm and hiring additional cybersecurity resources and talent to our team,” PPLA says in its letter to Planned Parenthood patients. “We deeply regret that this incident occurred and for any concern this may cause you.”
PPLA urges those affected by the Planned Parenthood data breach to call 866-665-2966 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pacific Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Saturday and Sunday. Callers should provide engagement No. B021848 to the operator.
