Rancho Mesquite Casino data breach class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: A California man has filed a class action lawsuit against Rancho Mesquite Casino.
  • Why: Rancho Mesquite is accused of failing to secure its computer systems and encrypt sensitive information during a November 2022 data breach. The casino is also accused of waiting too long to provide notice about the data breach.
  • Where: Rancho Mesquite operates casino properties in Las Vegas and Mesquite, Nevada, as well as The Brook in Seabrook, New Hampshire.

Rancho Mesquite Casino left its computer systems vulnerable to a cyberattack during a November 2022 data breach that exposed the personal information of more than 200,000 customers and employees, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

The southern Nevada casino is further accused of failing to provide “timely and adequate notice,” about the data breach, Las Vegas 8 News Now reports

Two of Rancho Mesquite’s casino properties were reportedly affected by data breach. The company operates both the Rising Star Sports Ranch Resort in Mesquite, Nevada, and The Brook in Seabrook, New Hampshire.

The hacker behind the data breach was able to access personal information including full names and Social Security numbers, according to the Rancho Mesquite Casino class action, Las Vegas 8 News Now reports.

Rancho Mesquite reportedly mailed notices about the data breach in December 2022, with the company offering affected individuals a dedicated phone line to contact them about the data breach, along with one year of free credit monitoring.

Rancho Mesquite says it ‘immediately took steps’ to secure systems after discovering data breach

In its data breach notice, Rancho Mesquite said it “immediately took steps” to secure its systems and, with the help of a cybersecurity firm, began an investigation into the incident, Las Vegas 8 News Now reports.

The individual behind the class action lawsuit, a California man, reportedly argues Rancho Mesquite failed to encrypt sensitive information, and that he and other class members now face “substantial risk of out-of-pocket fraud losses.”

Rancho Mesquite has been accused of negligence and breach of contract, among other things, Las Vegas 8 News Now reports.

The plaintiff is reportedly demanding a jury trial and requesting Rancho Mesquite implement more security measures along with an award of monetary damages for himself and all class members.

In December, Ibex agreed to pay $2.4 million to resolve claims it failed to protect consumer information during a 2020 data breach.
