Jewel-Osco data breach overview:

  • Who: Supermarket chain Jewel-Osco’s parent company, Albertsons, has sent a letter to employees informing them of a December data breach.
  • Why: The data breach exposed Jewel-Osco workers’ private information, including their names, birthdates and Social Security numbers.
  • Where: Jewel-Osco is a regional supermarket chain in the Chicago metropolitan area.
  • What are my options: Consumers wishing to better protect their own data may be interested in products from Norton LifeLock.

A data breach may have exposed the private information belonging to thousands of Jewel-Osco employees, according to a letter sent to workers last week by the supermarket chain’s parent company Albertsons.

Albertsons informed its workers that hackers were able to conduct a successful data breach of its internal systems in December and were able to steal data that included names, birthdates and Social Security numbers, CBS Chicago reports

It is reportedly unclear at this time how many Jewel-Osco employees may have been affected by the data breach; however, Albertsons has said the situation is now under control.

The company, which has Jewel-Osco store locations in the Chicago metropolitan area, has said it will be providing Jewel-Osco workers with free identity protection services in the wake of the data breach, CBS Chicago reports.

This is not the first time Jewel-Osco has experienced a security incident. A previous data breach affected the company back in the summer of 2014, according to the Country Herald. Customers’ payment information was exposed.

Jewel-Osco data breach only latest to make headlines this year

Data breaches have become an increasingly common occurrence and concern.

Last month, streaming platform Kodi disclosed that it suffered a data breach that has caused its MyBB software to show up for sale on internet forums.

Kodi has attributed the data breach to an account owned by a “trusted but inactive” member of its admin team being used to gain unauthorized access to its web-based MyBB admin console.

Also last month, insurance company Alacrity Solutions Group agreed to a settlement resolving claims revolving around a 2021 data breach that allegedly compromised the financial account data and other payment data of consumers.

Alacrity did not admit to any wrongdoing per the settlement agreement, which will allow class members to be compensated up to $4,000 for data breach-related expenses such as bank fees, credit costs and fraudulent charges, among other things.
