GardaWorld class action overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Jeremy Angelle filed a class action lawsuit against GardaWorld Cash.
  • Why: The lawsuit claims that GardaWorld’s insufficient cybersecurity led to a 2023 cyberattack and access to nearly 40,000 individuals’ personal information.
  • Where: The GardaWorld data breach lawsuit was filed in federal court in Florida.

A new class action lawsuit alleges GardaWorld failed to properly protect nearly 40,000 individuals’ personal information, ultimately leading to a targeted data breach.

The data breach resulted in 39,928 individuals’ information being compromised, including their names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, dates of birth, and/or insurance, benefits or other health-related information, GardaWorld said in notice to state attorneys general, according to the class action.

The GardaWorld data breach took place in October and November 2023.

“The private information was maintained on defendant’s computer network in a condition vulnerable to cyberattacks,” the GardaWorld class action says. “The mechanism of the cyberattack and potential for improper disclosure of plaintiff’s and class members’ private information was a known risk to defendant.”

Customers were alerted 4 months after GardaWorld data breach, lawsuit says

The GardaWorld data breach led to a risk of identity theft and fraud, forcing the nearly 40,000 affected individuals to closely monitor all of their financial accounts, the GardaWorld class action says.

The lawsuit also claims affected customers’ personal information was in the hands of those responsible for the cyberattack for four months before the company sent notice of the breach.

GardaWorld has not disclosed how the data breach occurred, which system vulnerabilities were exploited and what the company has done to combat future data breaches.

A hacker recently leaked around 73 million AT&T customers’ personal information nearly three years after claiming to have stolen it.
