FanDuel data breach overview:

  • Who: FanDuel warned its customers that an unauthorized party obtained their names and email addresses during a data breach disclosed by email marketing company MailChimp earlier this month.
  • Why: MailChip sends transactional emails on behalf of Fanduel and informed the sports betting company that the breach impacted its customers.
  • Where: Consumers nationwide use FanDuel.

FanDuel Sportsbook has warned customers a data breach disclosed by email marketing company MailChimp exposed their names and email addresses earlier this month.

MailChimp confirmed it experienced a data breach the company says was caused by hackers stealing the credentials of one of its employees using a social engineering-style attack, Bleeping Computer reported

FanDuel, meanwhile, reportedly began to email its customers last week to inform them the threat actors involved in the MailChimp data breach acquired their names and email addresses.

The sportsbook says a third-party technology vendor informed it of the data breach and confirmed an unauthorized actor was able to obtain the FanDuel customer information, Bleeping Computer reported

FanDuel reportedly says it was told that hackers did not obtain “customer passwords, financial account information or other personal information.”

FanDuel data breach did not affect its systems, user accounts

The betting company stressed that neither its systems nor any FanDuel users accounts were personally breached, Bleeping Computer reported.

In response to the data breach, FanDuel reportedly urged its customers to “remain vigilant” by being aware of the potential of phishing attacks and having someone attempt to take over their account using the obtained data.

The company also reminded customers it would never email them directly with requests for personal information, according to Bleeping Computer.

A consumer filed a separate class action lawsuit against FanDuel last year, arguing the company violates the law by only allowing its customers to withdraw funds that have been gambled or played through in their accounts.

The consumer behind the class action lawsuit claims FanDuel misleads bettors who believe they will be able to withdraw funds without playing through them first.

I was also affected by the breach. I kept getting numerous texts in a row saying “your account authentication code is …..” and I never requested it. I messaged them and they confirmed it was fraudulent activity.

Reply. I want to start another one because you can’t your money fast like they advertise. It’s only in your fanduel account you have to wait days to actually receive your money. I won during basketball took me 3 days to get my money because of the holiday and then your locked outnof the account until then so I couldn’t bet the next game via the app I had physically go to the location and play by machine none of this is explained in faqs or anywhere on the website.
