FanDuel Sportsbook has warned customers a data breach disclosed by email marketing company MailChimp exposed their names and email addresses earlier this month.
MailChimp confirmed it experienced a data breach the company says was caused by hackers stealing the credentials of one of its employees using a social engineering-style attack, Bleeping Computer reported.
FanDuel, meanwhile, reportedly began to email its customers last week to inform them the threat actors involved in the MailChimp data breach acquired their names and email addresses.
The sportsbook says a third-party technology vendor informed it of the data breach and confirmed an unauthorized actor was able to obtain the FanDuel customer information, Bleeping Computer reported.
FanDuel reportedly says it was told that hackers did not obtain “customer passwords, financial account information or other personal information.”
FanDuel data breach did not affect its systems, user accounts
The betting company stressed that neither its systems nor any FanDuel users accounts were personally breached, Bleeping Computer reported.
In response to the data breach, FanDuel reportedly urged its customers to “remain vigilant” by being aware of the potential of phishing attacks and having someone attempt to take over their account using the obtained data.
The company also reminded customers it would never email them directly with requests for personal information, according to Bleeping Computer.
A consumer filed a separate class action lawsuit against FanDuel last year, arguing the company violates the law by only allowing its customers to withdraw funds that have been gambled or played through in their accounts.
The consumer behind the class action lawsuit claims FanDuel misleads bettors who believe they will be able to withdraw funds without playing through them first.
