OpenAI has attributed a data breach that impacted its AI chatbot ChatGPT last week to a Redis client open-source library bug.
The data breach led to an outage and allowed ChatGPT users to view other users personal information and chat queries, reports Bleeping Computer.
ChatGPT allows users to see their historical chat queries in a sidebar located on the app, however, a number of users reported last Monday that they were able to see other users’ chat queries in their histories.
In addition, a number of ChatGPT Plus subscribers reported being able to see other users’ private email addresses from their subscription pages, reports Bleeping Computer.
OpenAI reportedly decided to take ChatGPT offline soon after the users’ reports began coming in, while the company investigated the issue.
In its post-mortem report, OpenAI explained that a bug located in the Redis client open-source library led to ChatGPT exposing the chat queries and personal information to around 1.2% of its ChatGPT Plus subscribers, reports Bleeping Computer.
“The bug was discovered in the Redis client open-source library, redis-py. As soon as we identified the bug, we reached out to the Redis maintainers with a patch to resolve the issue,” OpenAI said, in its post-mortem.
OpenAI discloses that financial information exposed in ChatGPT data breach
In total, the information exposed in the ChatGPT data breach included subscriber names, email addresses, physical addresses, and the last four digits and expiration date of their credit cards, reports Bleeping Computer.
OpenAI has reportedly reassured ChatGPT users that the number of impacted is likely low, since a user would have had to have taken specific actions to have been affected by the data breach.
The company also said, meanwhile, that it will be contacting all ChatGPT users who had their payment information exposed in the data breach.
Earlier this month, Snap-on agreed to a class action settlement to resolve claims the company failed to prevent a 2022 data breach that compromised the information of its associates and franchisees.
