Dole Food Company has confirmed that it suffered a data breach in February that compromised the information of an undisclosed number of its employees.

Confirmation of the data breach came in Dole’s annual report filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Wednesday, reports Bleeping Computer

“In February of 2023, we were the victim of a sophisticated ransomware attack involving unauthorized access to employee information,” Dole said, in its filing with the SEC.

Dole told the SEC that, upon discovering the data breach, it “promptly took steps to contain the attack” and retained the services of both law enforcement and “leading third-party cybersecurity experts.”

The food produce company — which employs around 38,000 people worldwide — disclosed the data breach last month while saying at the time that the incident would have a limited impact on its operations, reports Bleeping Computer.

Dole disclosed data breach to consumers last month following complaints of product delays, shortages

Dole reportedly decided to disclose the data breach to consumers after it began receiving complaints for more than a week about there being delays and shortages of Dole products on store shelves.

The company also sent a memo — which was later leaked online — to American grocery stores last month in which Dole said it was planning to implement a crisis management protocol in response to the data breach, reports Bleeping Computer.

“All our businesses are implementing our Crisis Management Protocol to resume ‘business as usual’ post haste, inclusive of our Manual Backup Program if needed. Please bear with us as we navigate our way and hopefully we will minimize this event,” Dole said, in the memo.

The data breach also caused Dole to temporarily shut down its production plants and put all of its shipments on hold, according to the memo.

In January 2022, Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc. announced that it was voluntarily recalling 72 of its Dole brand and private label packaged salads containing iceberg lettuce over concerns the products had been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes
