California Pizza Kitchen Data Breach Overview:

  • Who: California Pizza Kitchen revealed a data breach that impacted more than 100,000 of its current and former employees.
  • Why: The company says it determined the protected data — including names and social security numbers — of current and former employees was exposed to an unauthorized third party.
  • Where: The data breach potentially affects California Pizza Kitchen employees nationwide.

California Pizza Kitchen revealed a data breach last week that exposed the social security numbers of more than 100,000 of its current and former employees.

The restaurant said it first learned of suspicious activity in its computing environment on or around Sept. 15, at which time it says it worked with third-party computer specialists to immediately secure its server.

The company says its investigation ultimately determined in November that protected data — including social security numbers and employee names — had been exposed to third-parties who did not have authorization.

While California Pizza Kitchen did not reveal the amount of employees who may have been impacted, a notice posted by the Office of the Maine Attorney General lists more than 100,000 persons as being affected.

California Pizza Kitchen says there has been no evidence showing that any of the information has been improperly used, but that it is notifying anyone who was potentially affected by the data breach out of an “abundance of caution.”

“Upon discovering the event, California Pizza Kitchen moved quickly to investigate and respond to the incident, assess the security of the company’s email environment, and notify potentially affected individuals,” the company said.

California Pizza Kitchen said it is also working to implement employee training and put additional safeguards in place to help ensure another data breach does not occur.

The company is also offering to provide free access to credit monitoring services for 12 months for anyone whose personal information was potentially compromised.

Preliminary approval was given earlier this month to a $5 million settlement between Kroger and consumers who claimed the retail company’s software vendor exposed the personal information of more than 3.8 million of its customers

Also this month, a judge granted a request by T-Mobile to pause a class action lawsuit alleging it failed to protect its customers’ private information from an August data breach, amid a flood of new complaints.
