- Why: The announcement follows a decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that will allow certified pharmacies to begin offering the abortion pill in the U.S.
- Where: Nationwide.
Walgreens and CVS have said they plan to take steps to become certified in order to begin distributing the abortion pill mifepristone to consumers in the U.S.
The decision by two of the largest U.S. pharmacies follows an announcement last week by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the agency will allow pharmacies to begin offering abortion pills in the U.S.
Pharmacies that distribute mifepristone tablets will still be required to abide by the state they are located in, with some currently restricting the ability to offer abortion pills, Axios reported.
Consumers who are still in the first trimester of their pregnancies will reportedly be eligible to receive the mifepristone abortion tablets.
Pharmacies, meanwhile, must be certified before being able to offer the abortion pills, and must receive a prescription from a certified health provider in order to give them to a patient, reports Axios.
Walgreens and CVS are reportedly the first pharmacies to announce that it will be taking steps to become certified, in order to begin offering mifepristone.
Mifepristone previously only available through medical facilities, providers
Mifepristone could previously only be given to patients by clinics, medical offices and hospitals, or while under the care of a certified health provider, reports Axios.
The FDA reportedly previously announced last month that it intended on permanently ending a requirement for in-person distribution of mifepristone, with the latest regulatory update finalizing the decision.
Danco Laboratories, the manufacturer of mifepristone, said in a statement that the FDA’s decision comes at a critical time as “people across the country are struggling to obtain abortion care services.”
“This modification is critically important to expanding access to medication abortion services and will provide healthcare providers with an additional method for providing their patients with a safe and effective option for ending early pregnancy,” Danco said.
Abortion services have come under fire in the U.S. following the Supreme Court’s decision last year to overturn Roe v. Wade, which federally protected the right to abortion.
In August, police in Nebraska subpoenaed Facebook to obtain private messages made between a mother and her daughter prior to filing charges against them for allegedly performing an illegal abortion.
