The Cherokee Nation reached a $75 million settlement with opioid distributors AmerisourceBergen Corp., Cardinal Health Inc., and McKesson Corp. as a result of a lawsuit claiming the companies, among others, contributed to the opioid epidemic which has disproportionately affected the Cherokee Nation.Â
The funds will be distributed over six and half years, and will go towards reducing and preventing opioid addiction and its consequences within the Cherokee reservation, according to Cherokee Nation Attorney General Sara Hill.Â
The lawsuit, which is part of a multidistrict litigation, claimed opioid makers and distributors along with pharmacies contributed to the opioid epidemic by misleading the public about the dangers of opioids and failing to take measures to prevent the illegal sale of opioids.
This settlement does not include the claims made in the Cherokee Nations lawsuit against major pharmacy chains.Â
