A Georgia resident recently died after suffering a major bleeding injury from Xarelto, a lawsuit alleges.
According to the lawsuit, Bertha T. began taking Xarelto at the direction of her doctor on December 8, 2011, and continued to take it through October 23, 2014, when she suffered an intracranial hemorrhage.
On December 14, 2014, Bertha passed away. The lawsuit was filed by her estate’s co-executors.
The lawsuit alleges that Xarelto’s manufacturer, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, knew about the possibility of a major bleeding injury from Xarelto, yet failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community about these risks.
The lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including strict liability, manufacturing defect, design defect, failure to warn, breach of express and implied warranties, negligent misrepresentation, fraud, and survival action.
Major Bleeding Injury from Xarelto
Xarelto, also known by its generic name, rivaroxaban, is a popular anticoagulant distributed by Janssen Pharmacetuicals, a subsidiary of well-known pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson.
Xarelto was approved for use in 2011 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and was intended to treat patients undergoing hip and knee replacement surgeries.
The drug was later approved to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, as well as reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients.
Despite the drug’s popularity, this Xarelto lawsuit and others like it allege that a series of clinical trials has revealed a serious risk of major bleeding injury from Xarelto.
The clinical trials, known as the ROCKET study, indicated that Xarelto had a higher rate of major bleeding complications than did other drugs.
Major bleeding injury from Xarelto indicates that the bleeding either involved a critical organ, led to reoperation or led to fatality.
According to Xarelto bleeding lawsuits like this one, Janssen was aware of these studies and the risk of major bleeding injury from Xarelto, yet failed to report these issues as significant adverse effects.
Lawsuits further allege that the company failed to provide adequate warning to the public and the medical community about the risk of major bleeding injury from Xarelto.
Xarelto Bleeding Lawsuits
Xarelto is currently facing hundreds of Xarelto bleeding lawsuits filed for patients who, after taking Xarelto, have experienced gastrointestinal bleeding, hemorrhaging, or other adverse events.
These Xarelto lawsuits claim that the drug makers failed to be completely transparent in the warnings for their product and the Xarelto bleeding side effects.
These cases also allege that the drug maker should be held accountable for not providing an approved antidote that could reverse the medication’s effects, given the potentially damaging Xarelto side effects many claim to have suffered.
Plaintiffs claim that the drug manufacturers did not clearly portray the drug’s potentially damaging side effects on their packaging, in their advertising, or to the medical community as a whole.
