Consumers are benefitting from six Federal Trade Commission (FTC) refunds from November that resolved the regulator’s claims of academic fraud, auto-renewing subscriptions, illegal fees and more.

Saint James School of Medicine FTC refunds

The FTC is sending refunds to students who enrolled in Saint James School of Medicine between fall 2016 and summer 2021.

According to the FTC, Saint James lied to prospective medical students about their chances of passing a standardized medical school test and matching with a residency program. Instead of their odds being higher or “the same” as students of other medical schools, students of Saint James School of Medicine allegedly had a 35% chance to pass the licensing exam and a 20% lower chance than advertised to match with a residency program.

The FTC reached a $1.2 million judgment against Saint James and is now sending $830,300 to 1,376 students affected by the school’s alleged false advertising.

Consumers who receive a check should cash it within 90 days. PayPal payments should be accepted within 30 days.

Further questions about these FTC refunds can be directed to JND Legal Administration at 877-917-0089.

ABCmouse FTC refunds

A second round of FTC refunds is being sent to consumers who were charged for ABCmouse membership renewals without their consent.

The lawsuit against ABCmouse claims the company charged consumers for membership renewals without getting their consent. In addition, ABCmouse allegedly made it difficult for consumers to cancel their memberships. As a result, the FTC says subscribers were hit with unwanted, unexpected charges.

The FTC sent an initial round of refund payments in April 2021 that totaled $6.5 million. Now, with remaining funds, the FTC is sending additional payments to consumers who paid at least $31 in unauthorized renewals and who accepted their first round payment.

Consumers who receive a check should cash it within 90 days. PayPal payments should be accepted within 30 days.

Consumers can contact Rust Consulting at 800-351-7154 with additional questions about these refunds.

Ed Napleton Automotive Group FTC refunds

Customers of Ed Napleton Automotive Group are receiving $9.8 million in FTC refunds for unfair fees and discriminatory business practices.

According to the FTC, Napleton Automotive violated federal law by charging customers illegal fees for unwanted add-ons such as paint protection, gap insurance, extended warranties and more. These fees allegedly caused consumers to pay more for vehicles than they should have. The FTC also accused the dealership of discriminating against Black customers by charging them more for both vehicles and unwanted add-ons.

The FTC is sending over $9.8 million in refunds to consumers who paid unfair fees or suffered from discrimination as a result of the company’s practices. The agency is sending 66,355 checks that average $147 each.

Consumers who receive a check should cash it within 90 days.

Additional questions about the refunds can be directed to Epiq Systems at 888-691-6050.

Career Education FTC refunds

The FTC is sending a second round of refund checks to consumers affected by deceptive school promotions.

The agency claimed that Career Education Corp. used deceptive websites and high-pressure sales calls while promoting American InterContinental University, Colorado Technical University and Sanford-Brown. The company allegedly used misleading websites that promised help in finding jobs, getting government benefits and enlisting in the military. These websites stole consumer information, the FTC contends.

The FTC recovered funds from Career Education to return to affected consumers. The first round of refunds was distributed by the FTC in June 2021 and returned over $23 million to consumers. With remaining funds, the FTC is distributing a second round of payments to consumers who both cashed their first payment and paid over $1,000 to the defendants. No tax documents were issued with FTC refund payments.

Consumers who receive a check should cash it within 90 days.

The settlement administrator, JND Legal Administration, is available at 833-916-3603 for further questions.

Hylan Asset Management FTC refunds

A second round of FTC refunds is being sent to consumers who were targeted by abusive debt collectors attempting to secure debts they weren’t responsible for.

According to the FTC and the New York attorney general, Hylan Asset Management sold debts to companies that used abuse and illegal debt-collection practices when collecting debts. Hylan allegedly sold debts and tried to collect debts from consumers who did not owe the debts, even after being notified that the supposed debtors weren’t responsible for the debts.

The FTC is sending refunds to affected consumers. The first round of payments in October 2021 resulted in $584,000 in refunds for customers. Now, with the remaining funds, the FTC is sending a second round of checks to consumers who cashed their first check.

Consumers who receive a check should cash it within 90 days.

JND Legal Administration, the settlement administrator, can be contacted at 888-691-3554 for further questions about the FTC refunds.

Seed Consulting FTC refunds

Consumers could receive a second round of FTC refunds if they paid Seed Consulting for business “funding.”

The FTC contends Seed Consulting was portrayed as a way for consumers to secure funding for a new business or real estate investments. In reality, according to the FTC, the company is not a lender and instead charged consumers thousands of dollars to apply for credit cards on their behalf. This scheme allegedly saddles consumers with thousands of dollars in debt.

The FTC sent out $1.8 million in refunds for this matter in September 2021. The remaining funds are now being used to distribute a second round of checks. Checks will only be sent to consumers to cashed their first check from the FTC.

Consumers who receive a check should cash it within 90 days.

Consumers with additional questions can contact JND Legal Administration at 833-823-0045.
