Salmonella bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. It can cause fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain in healthy persons, the recall says.

On rare occasions, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and lead to severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis, according to the Walmart recall.
