Recent studies have indicated that melanoma skin cancer may be a possible consequence of Viagra. Studies have indicated that the Viagra effects may accelerate the rate of skin cancer growth.
Past studies have already stated that there may be an association between Viagra and melanoma cancer, with a new study stating that if melanoma patients are taking a sildenafil product, the rate of the cancer could significantly quicken.
The study indicates that sildenafil opens up a certain genetic pathway, cGMP, which allows for the development and progression of melanoma cancer. This study is significant because earlier studies have merely indicated that Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs increase the risk of melanoma cancer.
The Viagra study was partially dismissed because the lifestyle of the subjects were not considered. In this new study, sildenafil patients who are more active and outside more face an increased risk of melanoma cancer due to the higher sunlight exposure.
Overview of Viagra Melanoma Cancer
Viagra was first approved by the FDA in 1998, and has become the staple erectile dysfunction treatment drug in the United States. However, by 2014, there was a significant study that indicated that Viagra may lead to an increased melanoma cancer.
The study was published in the 2014 issue of JAMA Internal Medicine, and had observed subjects for a period of 10 years starting in 2000. Overall, the statistical adjustments of the study found indicate that Viagra increased the risk of melanoma cancer by 84 percent.
The study was conducted at Harvard University, with men filling out health and lifestyle questionnaires. More specifically, the questionnaires had asked men about their use of erectile dysfunction drugs, with over 1,618 using Viagra in 2000 alone.
Over the course of the study, it was found that 4.3 out of every 1,000 subjects who did not take Viagra had developed melanoma cancer, while 8.6 out of every 1,000 subjects in patients who had taken Viagra did develop melanoma.
Patients who are taking Viagra or generic slidenafil are encouraged to regularly check their skin for any suspicious moles and to report any abnormalities to their doctors. Melanoma cancer is very treatable if found at an early stage, but can be deadly as it progresses.
Viagra patients who developed melanoma cancer may be eligible to file legal action against Pfizer and should consult a specialized lawyer to determine if they have a claim.
