TikTok has settled three lawsuits brought by young people alleging the social media platform caused them mental health harm, a lawyer for the plaintiffs said.
Joseph VanZandt of Beasley Allen Law Firm, who represents the plaintiffs, told Law360: “The three plaintiffs have resolved their claims against TikTok in principle, subject to the finalization of written settlement agreements.”
VanZandt added that each plaintiff still maintains claims against Meta, YouTube and Snap.
Meta Platforms, Google and Snapchat remain defendants in the high-stakes October trials after Meta and Google lost a first-of-its-kind bellwether trial in Los Angeles Superior Court earlier this year, resulting in $6 million in damages.
The second bellwether trial, involving plaintiff R.K.C., was scheduled for July but was canceled after the plaintiff settled with TikTok, Snapchat and Google and dismissed the claims against Meta.
TikTok lawsuits allege platform designed to be addictive
The three plaintiffs, identified in court filings as S.J., P.M.Y. and K.D.B., allege Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and TikTok were designed to be addictive and caused them mental health harm.
The cases are among more than 3,000 consolidated before Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Carolyn B. Kuhl.
Kuhl scheduled all three for separate trials in October, noting that some plaintiffs could settle their claims and cancel the trials. If the cases proceed, she said other judges may hear them simultaneously in separate courtrooms.
The first bellwether trial wrapped up in March and resulted in a landmark verdict against Meta and Google. The jury found the companies liable for the mental health harm suffered by Kaley GM, who alleged she became addicted to their social media platforms as a child.
Jurors awarded $6 million total, far less than the billions in punitive damages her attorney suggested during closing arguments.
The social media companies are also facing thousands of similar federal claims in multidistrict litigation in the Northern District of California.
Meanwhile, Meta Platforms, Snap, TikTok and YouTube settled a bellwether social media addiction lawsuit filed by the Breathitt County School District, claiming it was forced to spend limited resources to address students’ mental health issues allegedly linked to the platforms.
