Samsung refrigeratorA design defect in Samsung refrigerators causes the coils to freeze over, leaving the refrigerator unable to remain cold enough to keep food from spoiling, according to a class action lawsuit filed in New Jersey. The lawsuit estimates thousands of U.S. consumers have purchased the defective refrigerators since 2005, and that consumers have suffered hundreds of dollar in damages from lost groceries and repairs caused by the alleged defect.

According to the Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit, “The refrigerators are designed and manufactured with heated coils that are intended to prevent excess frost from developing in the back of the machine. Instead of preventing frost, however, the coils allow frost and ice to build up in the refrigerators until the ice clogs and/or disables the machine’s fans, making it impossible for the fans to work to keep the machine cool.”

The alleged defect not only renders the refrigerators unusable, but also poses a safety risk to consumers because it leads to food spoilage and the risk of food-borne illnesses. Further enhancing consumers’ risk of illness is the fact that many of the refrigerators falsely display on the exterior temperature reader that the inside of the fridge is at a standard cool temperature.

The class action lawsuit alleges the defect exists in all three varieties of refrigerators Samsung manufactures, including its French door, side-by-side and bottom freezer varieties, and the model numbers:

  • RF266AASH
  • RS263BBWP
  • RB1955SH
  • RS2533SW
  • RS267LASH
  • RS267TDRS
  • RS2630WW

The lawsuit further charges that “Samsung sold and serviced the refrigerators even though it knew, or was reckless in not knowing, that the refrigerators were defectively designed, would fail prematurely, and would ultimately result in [class members’] inability to use their refrigerators for their intended purpose.”

This is the second class action lawsuit filed in two months over defective refrigerators causing food spoilage. A class action lawsuit filed in July alleges LG’s French door refrigerator models contain a defect that causes the interior light to stay on after the doors are closed, resulting in overheating, food spoilage, melted plastic and fire hazard.

The Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit is seeking damages, restitution and other awards for class members. A copy of the lawsuit can be read here.

UPDATE: On September 3, 2015, the Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit was dismissed.

My French door refrigerator purchased late 2017 has the same problems: ice maker froze and stopped working then ice formed over the entire back, fan stopped working and it smells like dead fish inside. I’ve used a hair dryer to remove ice inside the ice maker but it comes right back. Freezer is fine, refrigerator temperature is 50 degrees and I’ve thrown away so much food that spoiled. Went to buy a new refrigerator and was told that “Samsung fixed that issue 2 years ago, they knew it was a problem “. I’ll never buy another Samsung refrigerator. Looking for a class action suit to join.

We have Samsung refrigerator model RF263BEAESG, made in Aug 2018. French door but we are not happy at all : ice-maker not working all the time and we are defrosting the fridge every month, water leaking to in the cabinet, door shelf cracked and was only 4 small bottles of condiments on that shelf but it cracked anyway. I called Samsung customer service to sent me a repair person but price just to come and look up was so high and then plus price for new parts and labor so high that I am just hiring private refrigerator specialist to fix it and it’s much cheaper. It’s unbelievable how expansive refrigerator is getting broken very often. In summer ice maker not working again, I am so sick and tire of it. Please, add me to lawsuit and settlement.

My Samsung Refrigerator is at 50 degrees for the last few months, it will not go any lower. it has been making a lot of noise ever since I got it. The fan quit working on it a couple of months ago also. I got it in 2017. The store I got it from is no longer in open. The manufacture date is 2015.

Took an extended warranty through ABT, serviced for the same ice maker issue 3 times. Then Samsung sent another tech out and he said this would be the last time you fix it. Wrong, 6 months later we are taking the ice out of the ice maker and storing in a plastic container in the freezer. So the fan was making noise in back when it defrosted, ice formed in the back and had to be disassembled and defrosted and reassembled to stop the issue. This is something I will need to do every 6 months to keep this heap of dung working.

I bought my Samsung refrigerator in 2019. For 2 years now the icemaker freezes up every 2 weeks. We’ve resorted to using a hand held blow dryer to thaw the back of the ice maker so it can make ice only to happen again at least every 2 weeks! The ice maker is now leaking water on the inside of the frig from the seal. It makes odd noises periodically seeming to only be getting worse. I’ve contacted Samsung about this problem…they’ve offered me 500.00 for a refrigerator I paid $2,199.00 for! Really!! It’s only 4 years old!! Don’t buy Samsung!!

    1. Danielle says:

      Same here!!!

  10. Dianna lynn Giro says:

I bought my Samsung refrigerator 7 years ago. The technician from the store u bought it from was expensive and was no help. I have since bought and replaced 4 ice makers myself. Samsung offered me $600. For a refrigerator I paid 2100.00. what is up with that.
