Samsung refrigeratorA design defect in Samsung refrigerators causes the coils to freeze over, leaving the refrigerator unable to remain cold enough to keep food from spoiling, according to a class action lawsuit filed in New Jersey. The lawsuit estimates thousands of U.S. consumers have purchased the defective refrigerators since 2005, and that consumers have suffered hundreds of dollar in damages from lost groceries and repairs caused by the alleged defect.

According to the Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit, “The refrigerators are designed and manufactured with heated coils that are intended to prevent excess frost from developing in the back of the machine. Instead of preventing frost, however, the coils allow frost and ice to build up in the refrigerators until the ice clogs and/or disables the machine’s fans, making it impossible for the fans to work to keep the machine cool.”

The alleged defect not only renders the refrigerators unusable, but also poses a safety risk to consumers because it leads to food spoilage and the risk of food-borne illnesses. Further enhancing consumers’ risk of illness is the fact that many of the refrigerators falsely display on the exterior temperature reader that the inside of the fridge is at a standard cool temperature.

The class action lawsuit alleges the defect exists in all three varieties of refrigerators Samsung manufactures, including its French door, side-by-side and bottom freezer varieties, and the model numbers:

  • RF266AASH
  • RS263BBWP
  • RB1955SH
  • RS2533SW
  • RS267LASH
  • RS267TDRS
  • RS2630WW

The lawsuit further charges that “Samsung sold and serviced the refrigerators even though it knew, or was reckless in not knowing, that the refrigerators were defectively designed, would fail prematurely, and would ultimately result in [class members’] inability to use their refrigerators for their intended purpose.”

This is the second class action lawsuit filed in two months over defective refrigerators causing food spoilage. A class action lawsuit filed in July alleges LG’s French door refrigerator models contain a defect that causes the interior light to stay on after the doors are closed, resulting in overheating, food spoilage, melted plastic and fire hazard.

The Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit is seeking damages, restitution and other awards for class members. A copy of the lawsuit can be read here.

UPDATE: On September 3, 2015, the Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit was dismissed.

While researching better ways to fix my ice maker I found a youtube of a Florida report where they said it was a bigger issue than maybe just me or a small few of us. It sounds like they have already started paying people full price back for their refrigerators (as of two years ago) I have been struggling with my ice maker for years but also haven’t put too much thought into it either as it was a small issue at first. Now its 100% frozen over and I have spent days trying to fix this issue. I am the kind of person who has ice in every drink, this becomes a big expense when I go out and buy a bag of ice per week, hence the research on how the heck to permanently fix this. Sounds like the permanent fix is a different fridge but not at these prices nor at the price I paid for mine.

We have a Model #RF26HFENDSR Samsung Refrigerator. The refrigerator does NOT stay cold enough to keep the food from spoiling. We have suffered food poisoning due to spoiled food.

Samsung has charged us for a replacement Coil. We are waiting for the delivery since January 19, 2022. Twice the delivery date has been changed by Samsung, because they could NOT deliver on the promised date.

Samsung should replace my Refrigerator with ‘another functioning one’ that will NOT have the same defect.

  3. Gustavo Salcido says:

Why was the claim dismissed? Will they file another? This is ridiculous. The fridge is a POS. Everyone should ship their fridges back to Samsung headquarters, not the warehouses but to their offices. That should make an impression. I know, the expenses!!! But wouldn’t that be nice…

Well I am yet another of many owners of a Samsung Refrigerator dealing with the same icemaker issues. Wevpurchased the frig in 2018 and on repair number 3. Although very thankful we purchased an extended warranty, we know this issue is going to persist well beyond our warranty and that Really Makes Me Upset!!! Upset because Samsung needs to take responsibility, But they are not!!!!

I owned a RF28HFEDBSR (purchased in 11/2015), it was frustrating because the instruction says you would you need to unplug the refrigerator and let the ice melt out, and I couldn’t keep doing this every 6 months!

I’ve seen videos on YouTube where people were using hair-dyers to melt the ice.

    1. Lisa Houghton says:

Coils freeze over causing the fan to make an alarming noise. We then tear open the back panel and defrost the coils. This is occurring every three months. On top of that, the ice maker has not functioned for the last 4/8 years. I want some form of compensation so I can go and buy another brand of refrigerator before this one sets my house on fire!

  10. Alex says:

I have the same problem with my ice maker. I bought the house in 2020 and it came with all the appliances, everything worked great until I noticed that there was not as much ice coming out one day. I took the ice container out and saw that there was a huge chunk of ice that had frozen over the whole thing. I had to use a blow dryer to get it all to melt and it took forever. The ice maker started working fine and then about a month later the same thing happened and it was spitting water out first when we would hit the ice button. Since then I have just left the ice off but its annoying that we now cant have ice in our drinks. My fridge model is RF30BEDBSR / AA and I think its a 2016? not 100% sure since I was not the one that bought it. Has anyone seen that model included in any of the claims??
