Samsung refrigeratorA design defect in Samsung refrigerators causes the coils to freeze over, leaving the refrigerator unable to remain cold enough to keep food from spoiling, according to a class action lawsuit filed in New Jersey. The lawsuit estimates thousands of U.S. consumers have purchased the defective refrigerators since 2005, and that consumers have suffered hundreds of dollar in damages from lost groceries and repairs caused by the alleged defect.

According to the Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit, “The refrigerators are designed and manufactured with heated coils that are intended to prevent excess frost from developing in the back of the machine. Instead of preventing frost, however, the coils allow frost and ice to build up in the refrigerators until the ice clogs and/or disables the machine’s fans, making it impossible for the fans to work to keep the machine cool.”

The alleged defect not only renders the refrigerators unusable, but also poses a safety risk to consumers because it leads to food spoilage and the risk of food-borne illnesses. Further enhancing consumers’ risk of illness is the fact that many of the refrigerators falsely display on the exterior temperature reader that the inside of the fridge is at a standard cool temperature.

The class action lawsuit alleges the defect exists in all three varieties of refrigerators Samsung manufactures, including its French door, side-by-side and bottom freezer varieties, and the model numbers:

  • RF266AASH
  • RS263BBWP
  • RB1955SH
  • RS2533SW
  • RS267LASH
  • RS267TDRS
  • RS2630WW

The lawsuit further charges that “Samsung sold and serviced the refrigerators even though it knew, or was reckless in not knowing, that the refrigerators were defectively designed, would fail prematurely, and would ultimately result in [class members’] inability to use their refrigerators for their intended purpose.”

This is the second class action lawsuit filed in two months over defective refrigerators causing food spoilage. A class action lawsuit filed in July alleges LG’s French door refrigerator models contain a defect that causes the interior light to stay on after the doors are closed, resulting in overheating, food spoilage, melted plastic and fire hazard.

The Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit is seeking damages, restitution and other awards for class members. A copy of the lawsuit can be read here.

UPDATE: On September 3, 2015, the Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit was dismissed.

Add us to the list of malfunctioning ice makers! I have to get out my wife’s hairdryer every 6 weeks and defrost the icemaker the unit is 5 years old!!
Samsung gave us a 50% off coupon for a new fridge , but guess what they don’t deliver to where we live ! The ultimate bait and switch!
Never ever buy a Samsung fridge!!

  2. Jean Michel Castel says:

My Samsung rf26hfen has been the worst fridge I’ve owned. Starting right away it collected water and ice paddles under the crisper drawers, found when it overflowed onto the floor. Requires quarterly attention to prevent overflows
The rear of the frisge has completely iced over. After a full defrost, the ice blocked the rear again, fully, within 60 days. The internal tempt is over 48f while the display shows 37f, and I have found spoilt food. I won’t buy another Samsung product of any sort, appliance or other, as Samsung “continues to stand behind the product” which makes them knowing liars who can’t be trusted

My Samsung has the exact same issue! I went from defrosting every 60 days to weeks and it is not only wasteful of my time but of money. I am in no position to purchase another refrigerator and when I do it will NEVER BE A SAMSUNG! Ever.

My Samsung is a 2015 RF28 and has been freezing up since 2020, it will run for a few months and then the noise starts, ice getting around the fan motor. I called Samsung the first few time this happened and was told to empty everything out and store in another fridge, open all doors and let it defrost, I have had to do this a number of times each year because it gets so bad the force defrost doesn’t work properly. I have a 1950s fridge that I know has to be defrosted, but in 2020s I never thought I would have to defrost a modern appliance lol, mine works and cools fine, but freezes up every few months, very disappointed with Samsung refrigerators

Very upset that this refrigerator has had nothing but problems. First ice maker, now frosting in freezer and not cooling correctly in the refrigerator and drawer 36 on door but 42 to 45 inside. So may people are having the same problems and samsung won’t pay to have it fixed. Putting a review in on it and reporting to NJBBB. Very poor customer service on a item that was over 3k and goes bad.
    Model number RF28HMEDBSR/AA
People are getting sick, samsung knows this. Took 5 tries for my ice maker and now the internal thermometers are reading 44 to 45

  5. Joan M says:

Two thousand dollars and five years later we too have a useless ice maker, on our Samsung model RF23HCEDBSR

  6. Joseph says:

We have had nothing but problems with our Samsung Ice Marker and keeping our food cold. This has gone on from 6 months till now as it just stopped working and destroyed everything we had in it. I have now gone out to buy a new GE as Samsung can’t be trusted and have told me to kick rocks since my model isn’t in the recall. I will never buy from them again with this kind of product and support! They could have at very least given me half of my money back but guess it is a lesson learned with this company.

I will never purchase another Samsung POS kitchen appliances!!!! They need to stick to making televisions only, even if that. My refrigerator is only six years old and have had the water part replaced, now I just had to pay 489.00 for a kit for the ice maker. No more services. After this, it can be junked and I’ll buy another brand. Samsung is a complete joke!!!!!!

  9. Laura says:

We have had the same issues since we purchased the Samsung. WILL NEVER buy another Samsung product. Our POS just blew the compressor $3500 and it only lasted for 6 years? The 6 year is being kind it really never worked. We had the ice maker fixed 2 times. Still did not work. Never kept the food cold and constantly had ice in places it was not supposed to. RUN from Samsung. Sad after years and many dollars spent on Samsung products.

  10. Gina says:

We bought bottoms drawer Samsung refrigerator in April 20218. Have had to have ice maker repaired three times!!!!! Now works but have to empty frozen mass of ice cubes periodically and defrost back of ice maker!!!!!! Why is there not a recall!
