Stevens Johnson Syndrome RashStevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is an extremely serious allergic reaction specifically caused by an adverse reaction to a drug, and seems to be linked to an increasing number of medications.

Stevens Johnson Syndrome is often characterized by red and purple skin lesions. This condition can quickly progress into fatal stages, with survivors often incurring permanent skin scarring and some degree of blindness.

SJS is a big concern to the medical community, as there is currently no diagnostic method available to determine if a patient is pre-disposed to suffering Stevens Johnson Syndrome.

Aloprim (Allopurinol) is another medication that could be potentially associated with Stevens Johnson Syndrome, which is bad news for chemotherapy patients.

Aloprim is typically administered intravenously by the doctor, in order to prevent or treat high uric acid levels in the blood.

Uric acid is an almost insoluble product, which is produced as a breakdown substance from nitrogenous metabolism.

Aloprim works by inhibiting xanthine oxidase, which caused the body to produce less uric acid from cancer treatment medications.

Overview of Aloprim Stevens Johnson Syndrome

This medication can also be used to treat simple conditions like hypertension and gout, which makes its alleged association to Stevens Johnson Syndrome even worse.

According to a recent study published in the American Journal of Medicine, indicates that patients may have an increased risk of developing Aloprim SJS rash.

The study was conducted by a Canadian research team, which had evaluated patient charts from the Vancouver General Hospital that had been admitted to the hospital from Stevens Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN).

The records had stemmed over a period of ten years, with the researchers analyzing different possibilities of SJS triggers.

The results of the study had identified generic Aloprim as the single most common medication, responsible for approximately 20 percent of the SJS and TEN cases.

Furthermore the researchers had also noted that patients of Chinese descent showed that highest vulnerability to Aloprim SJS rash mortality at 47 percent compared to patients of Caucasian descent that showed a 14 percent of Aloprim SJS rash mortality.

This study was not only conducted to determine different risk factors regarding Stevens Johnson Syndrome, focusing on potential trigger medications.

Similar studies have also indicated an increased risk of Aloprim SJS rash, with one study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in January 2008.

The study indicated that Aloprim was the most commonly named medication in SJS TEN cases in Europe and Israel, consisting of 18 percent of all cases.

Patients who suffer SJS reactions may be eligible to file legal action against the drug manufacturing companies, as this condition is often omitted from drug warning labels.

Potential claimants should contact a specialized lawyer, to determine their eligibility for a Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuit.
