American Honda Motor Co. is facing a class action lawsuit over problems with the electric power steering in the Honda Civic.

The power steering in the 2022-2023 Honda Civic can stick while driving at highway speeds and the momentary issue can cause an increase in the effort to steer and lead to overcorrections that turn into collisions, according to the Honda Civic steering class action lawsuit.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received complaints about the issue but Honda has not addressed the Honda Civic steering problems that NHTSA says happen “mostly at highway speeds after driving for a certain amount of time” and can happen in low-mileage vehicles, the class action says.

“Honda has long known or should have known of the EPS problems from pre-release vehicle testing, consumer complaints, and other sources,” the Honda Civic steering class action lawsuit claims. “Yet Honda failed to disclose and actively concealed information about the dangerous EPS problems from the public; continues to manufacture, distribute, and sell the Class Vehicles without such disclosure; and refuses to fix the problem.”

California resident Omar Gonzalez filed the class action lawsuit after having the issue with a Honda Civic he purchased for $26,000. Gonzalez claimed the Civic steering problems caused his vehicle to head into oncoming traffic.

Class is entitled to damages and injunctive relief due to Honda Civic steering problems, class action lawsuit claims

The plaintiff is asking for damages to be paid by Honda and both permanent and temporary injunctive relief from the company for the steering problems. The claims include breach of warranty, violations of the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act, unjust enrichment, violations of the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act, Violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law, fraud by concealment, breach of warranty of merchantability and violations of the South Carolina Unfair Trade Practices Act.

The class is also asking for attorneys’ fees and punitive damages for the Honda Civic steering problems.

My Honda 2022 civic sport was having sticky steering problems. I was making a right hand turn the steering wheel locked and I hit a curb causing significant damage. Honda dealership says it’s not from the recall. I would love to speak to someone who can help me.

My 2022 Honda Civic Sport sat in the dealership for 2 months waiting for my steering issue to be fixed once I said I wanted Honda to but back the defective car the new part arrived and my car was fixed. My car is still experiencing steering issues I brought it in again and they said the alignment was off they just aligned it. Few weeks ago when they replaced the steering issue. How can it be out of alignment again. They claimed they could not find any other issues my car feels like it’s gonna die when I’m driving in freeway my car is a straight up lemon my commute 150 miles everyday my car is almost at 32,000 miles and they want to charge me $2500 for an extended warranty but I had to buy it that day if I did not buy it that dat they said it would go up. I said I had until I reached 36,000 miles to purchase an extended warranty they said the price will go up each day after they quoted me the price. I don’t understand how or why as long as I purchase it before 36,000 the price should be the same it’s an extended warranty that takes effect after I ready 36,000 miles. Honda is a rip off my car is a death trap

I recently purchased a 2022 Honda Civic Sport in March 2023. I have owned several Honda’s and I noticed upon the test drive that the steering was sticking/pulling. I assumed it was one of the functions such as the LKA or driver adaptability that needed to be disabled; I mentioned to my Salesman that it needed to be disabled because it was maddening to drive once I reached 60 mph. On the way home, I was on the highway and it was SO BAD! Going straight there is a micro-correction that it does even if all of the “safety features” are disabled! I had my husband drive the car to see what I was talking about. As soon as we got on the highway he said “well this is an expensive death trap”! I called the dealership the next day (which was Saturday) they were not able to get the car in until Monday. I left the dealership with a loaner. I had the loaner for 1 week, I was then told I needed to bring the loaner back because it was going to take some time to get the steering rack that Honda agreed to replace, that it would likely not be until July 2023. I have filed complaints through the NHTSA, in addition to reaching out to Honda Corporate via their website and Twitter, I even submitted a claim for arbitration that was denied because I did not purchase the car brand new. I have not driven the car since I purchased it because it is not safe to drive! I was told over and over from the technician at the dealership that the car is safe and that there are no codes being shown . I explained in great detail of how constant overcorrection and jerking sensation going straight and even a slight turn in the road, the car will veer, pulling me off the road or into oncoming traffic. I was dismissed as they said several people had driven the car and could not duplicate the issues I was complaining of. On the invoice once I picked the car up, the mileage in (when I dropped it off) and the mileage out (when I had to pick it up) were exactly the same; no one drove the car. I have since been contacted by Honda telling me that the delay on the part is due to a global back order on the part needed.

    1. John S. says:

Hi Sarah, you are not alone with this my 2022 Honda Civic LX is having the same issues. I noticed the sticky steering wheel when I go over 60 mph in the beginning. I took it to the dealership and told them this. They tried to explain what it was doing because I heard that my car had a recall for a steering situation and so I told the dealership about that and they said that recall doesn’t affect your model civic and I said yes it does because I’m experiencing the exact same things that recall why it is being recalled and so I didn’t get anywhere with them this last time I took to the dealership to get my oil changed because I got suckered into getting the you know free oil changes you know when I purchase the car and then a couple months later I received a recall notice for my car, they said that my Vin, my particular Vin number is part of the recall so I took it in we and a half ago to get the oil changed and for them to fix the recall or to see if it was part of it and to test drive my car on the freeway and on the street and they did not do that because they said my phone number was OK. It wasn’t part of the recall and I said there is no way possible that this is happening to me and it I told him I said it affects all Honda Civic for the years at least your 22 that I can vouch for and so I’m frustrated. I don’t feel like driving my car. I’m an Uber driver. I don’t feel safe on the road and Honda does not even help me at all. They actually were condescending on the phone and made me feel like it was crazy. You know I filled out their survey of how great a job they did because they always know me. Make sure you give us five stars you know well no they did not get that and I received a letter saying that my warranty is expiring and I should get an extended warranty and this is all crap extended warranty are There a scam so now I’m stuck with the Honda is gone down extremely and even the fabric and the car seats are crap they stain the seats are uncomfortable I mean the whole car is a huge lemon and I’m completely unsatisfied with Honda and I don’t trust them so I am going to be a part of that class action lawsuit. All I want is the money back I put into this car and we can call it a day you know it’s it’s not right I’m not trying to get money out of them. I just want the money back that I put into this piece of junk, so I can get another car you know these days I can’t afford anything. Honda just needs to make this right if they want to keep their sparkly image of dependable nice well built cars just right now that is tarnished

At bogs not sure if it’s correct word for the car stalling on me while driving and coming to a stop

  6. Geneva Wisnewski says:

Yes I have been experiencing this issue shortly after purchasing my new Honda 2022 Civic I complained about this 3 times with the Honda service Advisor shrugging me off each time blaming me for not knowing how to use the Honda driver assist I need to get used to it was what I was told. Finally the 4th time I mentioned that I am aware that others are experiencing the same issue and I want my vehicle steering checked. Once I mentioned the news article they finally listened to me and YES my car is equipped with the same steering that they’ve been having an issue with. But NO ETA for when part will if ever be in stock to fix the issue. My arms are killing me everyday from driving to and from work each day I drive 140 miles a day to get to work and home I feel unsafe in this Honda that I paid a lot of money for I feel so unsafe in the vehicle I feel that the car is also now starting to shut off on me while driving. Death trap is what I’m beginning to feel like I’m driving everyday
