Mirena IUD LawsuitThe Mirena IUD litigation held in Bergen County, New Jersey, where nearly 1,100 lawsuits have been filed, continues to move forward with a Case Management Conference scheduled for next week.

During the Nov. 18 meeting, parties involved in the litigation will discuss the next steps for the Mirena IUD lawsuits, which allege serious complications caused by the birth control device.

Plaintiffs allege Bayer knew that the Mirena IUD could spontaneously migrate after insertion but failed to pass on this risk to women.

Mirena lawsuit plaintiffs describe how the IUD exited their uterus then migrated and ultimately embedded itself onto a different part of the body. Thousands of women (more than 45,000 to be exact) have reported to the FDA  that they experienced a variety of Mirena IUD complications after the IUD migrated, including intense pain, cramping, device failure, infection, unwanted pregnancies, and ectopic pregnancies.

Mirena lawsuit plaintiffs accuse Bayer of overstating Mirena’s benefits and not adequately explaining its side effects. In 2009, Bayer received a warning letter from the FDA concerning its advertisements for Mirena. The FDA letter said Bayer omitted vital safety information about the side effects Mirena while overstating its benefits.

In addition to the nearly 1,100 Mirena IUD lawsuits pending in New Jersey, an additional 1,042 Mirena lawsuits have been consolidated in the Southern District of New York.

Legal experts across the country are encouraging women who were injured by the Mirena IU, to consult an attorney to see if they meet the criteria for filing a Mirena IUD lawsuit and potentially seeking compensation for their injuries. The charges being brought forward against Bayer include: negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

Overview of Mirena IUD Complications

The Mirena IUD is an intrauterine device that is directly implanted into the patient’s uterus to act as a long-term birth control device. Ideally, this device would last up to five years and provide hassle-free pregnancy prevention.

Doctors typically only prescribe Mirena to women who have already had one child. It is important to note that ectopic pregnancies, or pregnancies that develop outside the uterus, have occurred in women who have used Mirena.

The Mirena IUD is manufactured by Bauer Pharmaceuticals, and has been used by millions of women across the United States.

Nearly 2,000 Mirena IUD lawsuits have been filed by women who experienced severe complications caused by the intrauterine device migrating and perforating the uterus, sometimes embedding into nearby organs.

Plaintiffs allege that Bayer knew these risks but failed to warn women of these potential Mirena IUD complications. According to medical experts, some of the more extreme side effects of Mirena are caused by the body’s rejection of the IUD device, when it attempts to embed itself on another part of the abdominal cavity; extreme cases in this scenario can include scarring and infertility.
