The Marlboro class action settlement resolves allegations that Philip Morris violated Massachusetts state law by misrepresenting its cigarettes as “lights” and “lowered tar and nicotine.”

According to the plaintiffs, Philip Morris intentionally marketed Marlboro Lights as a “safer” alternative to regular Marlboros when they knew the cigarettes didn’t have a significantly lower amount of tar.

Philip Morris denied the allegations but agreed to pay more than $15 million to settle the case.

Class Members included all Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island or Vermont residents who purchased Marlboro Lights regularly within the State of Massachusetts between Nov. 25, 1994 and Nov. 25, 1998.

The deadline to file a claim for the Marlboro Lights class action settlement passed on Nov. 28, 2016.

I filed a claim and never received anything either. A lot of people filed claims and have never smoked. I am curious how that is fair.

My grandfather also filed a claim and has yet to receive his. I had contacted the administrator multiple times and said that they found the claim and it would be sent out in a few weeks. This was back in late April last year and still no claim. I tried to contact them again and the email I sent them came back to me as not deliverable. Did they close up shop without giving all claims due. It seems a little fishy that the would close down all communications when there are still some claims out there that have yet to be sent to the claimants.

court approved notice from attys went out to claimants who received payments in the 1st round saying saying there was $2.2M remaining in the settlement fund that was supposed to be distributed to claimants who cashed their checks in the 1s round but they find it “economically unfeasible” because the cost to administer the remaining funds would out weigh the fund balance.
