Top Class Actions viewers are starting to receive checks in the mail from a class action settlement that alleged Liberty Tax violated numerous state laws by not properly disclosing to customers its Financial Products fees as finance charges.
According to comments and posts on the Top Class Actions Facebook page, Class Members who submitted timely and valid claims for the Liberty Tax settlement began receiving checks worth as much as $129.36 on Aug. 4, 2016.
If you filed a claim for the Liberty Tax class action settlement, keep an eye on your mailbox because your check should be on its way!
The Liberty Tax settlement resolves allegations that the products, provided by Republic Bank but facilitated by Liberty Tax, did not fully inform customers of the Annual Percentage Rate of what Class Members assumed was a loan. In addition, Liberty Tax customers were also able to pay for the tax preparation or filing fees out of his/her tax return rather than paying for the cost up front.
Class Members included: “All Liberty Tax customers who in any of nine states – California, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Maryland, Illinois, Arkansas, Florida and New York – used Liberty Tax for tax preparation services and received a Refund Anticipation Loan or other loan product, Electronic Refund Check, Electronic Refund Deposit or a similar financial product provided by Republic Bank which were facilitated by Liberty Tax from 2009 through 2012.”
Liberty Tax denied the allegations but agreed to pay $5.3 million to settle the case and avoid the risk of ongoing litigation.
The deadline to file a claim for the Liberty Tax class action settlement passed on Jan. 2, 2016.
