A Rhode Island woman claims that Biomet failed to adequately warn consumers about the risks and severity of side effects of the Biomet hip replacement system.

Plaintiff Pamela S. filed this hip replacement lawsuit against Biomet, alleging she sustained severe hip replacement injuries as a direct result of Biomet’s defective manufacturing and marketing of the M2a Taper hip implant.

Pamela received the Biomet hip replacement system in May 2004 during a right total hip replacement surgery. Pamela claims after the hip replacement surgery that she suffered debilitating pain, discomfort, soreness and dysfunction and had to undergo premature hip revision surgery in 2013 to replace the metal hip implant for her right hip.

The Biomet hip replacement lawsuit further alleges that Biomet failed to adequately test the impact of the metal-on-metal hip replacement system or warn about the risk that the implant may loosen or fail within a few years after hip replacement surgery.

Pamela is seeking judgment for general and special damages, pain and suffering, loss of earnings, medical expenses, attorney’s fees and court costs.

Biomet Hip Replacement Surgery Problems

The Biomet M2a Taper Hip is a metal-on-metal hip replacement system, a predecessor to the Biomet M2a Magnum Hip System, that has been implanted in patients throughout the United States. Numerous reported Biomet hip replacement problems suggest that the company’s artificial hip implants may be prone to fail within a few years of hip replacement surgery.

While typical hip implants consist of components made of metal and plastic, the Biomet Magnum metal hip system has three all-metal components: a metal femoral head, metal taper insert and metal acetabulum cup. As the metal parts rub against each other, microscopic shavings of metal may be released into the hip joint, which could cause inflammation, loosening, and other problems associated with metal hip poisoning.

Potential signs of Biomet Magnum hip problems could include:

• Unexplained hip pain
• Swelling and soft tissue damage
• Unexplained tumors
• Difficulty standing or walking
• Loosening of the hip implant
• Additional hip revision surgery
