- Why: A malfunctioning canister purge valve (CPV) can cause the engine to stall unexpectedly.
- Where: The Ford recall is active in the United States.
Ford is recalling more than 255,000 Focus vehicles due to a potential engine stalling issue. The recall targets specific 2012-2018 Ford Focus models that were previously thought to have been repaired under an earlier recall but were not correctly fixed.
The recall, issued on June 9, affects Focus sedans and hatchbacks that were incorrectly marked as having received a necessary software update under a 2019 recall.
The problem arises from a malfunction in the canister purge valve, which can lead to the engine stalling unexpectedly. This defect can cause the CPV to remain open during the engine’s evaporative-leak monitor check, resulting in an unexpected stall and preventing the engine from restarting, which can increase the risk of a crash.
Ford has not reported any injuries or accidents related to this issue so far.
Ford to offer additional repairs and free updates, recall says
Ford advises owners to bring their vehicles to a dealership where the Powertrain Control Module software will be updated free of charge. Owners who previously paid for repairs may be eligible for reimbursement.
Notification letters are expected to be sent out by July 6 and vehicle identification numbers involved in this Ford recall will be searchable on the NHTSA website from the same date.
For those needing more information, Ford can be contacted at 1-866-436-7332 Monday through Friday.
Ford has stated that it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this defect. The company is not currently facing any legal action over the Ford recall, but such recalls can sometimes lead to class action lawsuits, which are closely monitored by Top Class Actions.
In other major recalls recently, Ford called back nearly 1.4 million F-150 trucks due to a gearshift malfunction that poses a “significant safety risk.”
