Ford has initiated a recall of more than 870,000 F-150 vehicles, as the electric parking brake in the recalled vehicles can activate unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published the recall on its website July 21. It applies to 870,701 of Ford’s model year 2021-2023 F-150 vehicles equipped with a single exhaust system.
According to the recall, the affected vehicles may experience an “unintended activation of the electric parking brake” while driving if the electric parking brake wiring is damaged and the circuit shorts to ground.
“Damaged electric parking brake wiring may lead to inadvertent parking brake application while driving, potentially resulting in loss of control of the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash,” the Ford F-150 recall states.
Ford receives hundreds of reports, F-150 recall states
As of July 11, Ford was aware of 918 warranty and three field reports for the wire chafing condition in North America between August 2021 and July 2023, the recall states.
Of these reports, 299 indicated the electric parking brake had unintended activation, of which 19 allege electric parking brake application while driving.
Ford is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue so far, it says.
The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
To fix the issue, dealers will install a protective tie strap and tape wrap and replace the harness as necessary, free of charge. Ford expects to mail owner notification letters Sept. 11, 2023, according to the F-150 recall notice.
In June, Ford recalled more than 125,000 Escape and Lincoln Corsair SUVs and Maverick compact pickup trucks from the 2020-2023 model years with 2.5L hybrid or plug-in hybrid engines as the engines can fail, causing a fire.

Had this issue before the ‘official’ recall. Ford tech told me exactly this, the wire for the e-brake was ran above the axle in spot that rubs. They had already fixed a few of these locally so they had an in-house fix for it.
Add me
Emergency brakes should not be electric at all; they should be mechanical, a cable. This is asking for trouble and should be banned. Simply incompetent, inexperienced engineering.
