Ford recalled more than 125,000 SUVs and trucks as the engines can fail, causing a fire.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) website published the recall May 26. It applies to various Escape and Lincoln Corsair SUVs and Maverick compact pickup trucks from the 2020-2023 model years with 2.5L hybrid or plug-in hybrid engines.

According to the recall, in the event of an engine failure, engine oil and fuel vapor may release into the engine compartment and accumulate near ignition sources, such as hot engine or exhaust components, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.

“An engine compartment fire increases the risk of injury,” the Ford recall states.

In July 2022, Ford initially recalled 100,000 Escape, Corsair and Maverick vehicles in the United States after identifying 23 reports globally of fire or smoke after a suspected block or oil pan breach, the recall states.

Ford says it had reports of at least three vehicles that suffered fires after the 2022 recall fix so is now extending the recall.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Remedy still in development, Ford recall says

Owners of the affected vehicles should park and shut off the engine as quickly as possible if they hear unexpected engine noises, notice a reduction in vehicle power,or see smoke, the Ford recall states.

The remedy is still in development, Ford says. It expects to mail letters notifying owners of the safety risk June 12. It will mail second letters once the remedy is available.

Meanwhile, Ford initiated a recall of more than 175,000 five-door Bronco SUVs due to an issue with their front seat belts.
