  • Who: A group of Ford vehicle owners filed a class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Company.

Ford Motor Company designed, manufactured and sold certain of its model 2017 and newer vehicles equipped with a defective 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

A group of Ford vehicle owners argue the automaker either knew or should have known the vehicles allegedly contained one or more design and/or manufacturing defects, including with their 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissions.

Vehicle owners argue the alleged transmission defect caused the vehicles — including model year 2017 and newer Ford Expeditions, Mustangs, Rangers, F-150s, and Lincoln Navigators — to jerk, lunge, clunk, and hesitate between gears.

“Drivers need a properly functioning automatic transmission in order to safely and reliably accelerate and decelerate their Vehicles,” the Ford class action states. “A common design and/or manufacturing defect in Ford’s 10R80 transmissions is a potentially life-threatening safety issue.”

Vehicle owners want to represent a nationwide class and an Alabama subclass of consumers who are current or former owners or lessees of one or more Ford vehicles equipped with a 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission.

Ford refuses to recall or replace allegedly defective 10-speed transmissions, says class action

Vehicle owners argue Ford failed to disclose the alleged defect to consumers, and has refused to recall or replace the allegedly defective 10-speed transmissions, but, instead, “merely states that the abrupt and harsh shifting is normal.”

“An auto manufacturer that is aware of dangerous design defects that cause its vehicles to jerk, hesitate, surge, or slip gears must promptly disclose and remedy such defects,” the Ford class action states.

Vehicle owners claim Ford is guilty of fraud, unjust enrichment, negligence, and fraudulent concealment, among other things, and of violating the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and the Alabama Deceptive Trade Practices Act

Plaintiffs are demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of actual, punitive, and statutory damages for themselves and all class members.

A separate class action lawsuit was filed against Ford earlier this month by a group of vehicle owners arguing the automaker manufactured certain of its model 2016 and newer vehicles with defective Ford 1.0-liter EcoBoost engines

  1. Mark Goudy says:

I currently own a 2018 F150 XLT that i purchased new in 2019. After about 3,000 miles the transmission went out and the dealer that I purchased it from replaced it which took about 2 1/2 months of them dealing with Ford. I currently was returning from vacation and 1,000 miles away from home the transmission failed again with a current mileage of 127,000 miles. This time it will cost me $8,000 to repair with a 2 year unlimited miles warranty. I have been a Ford buyer my entire driving life as well as my father and grandfather. This makes me leery of purchasing another Ford.

  2. Mark Robinson says:

I had to replace my 10 speed transmission in my 2018 F150 with a used transmission because new parts were not available to rebuild my transmission. I have all the symptoms that I’ve read through most of the items listed. Ford would not acknowledge any problems. When I had the transmission replaced, they really didn’t even want to talk to me about it because it’s not factory anymore. I was lucky that I have purchased an extended warranty. I was lucky that I had purchased an extended warranty on my vehicle. I had the transmission replaced at 84,000 miles. But this transmission that they put in while it is better than the other one it’s still has its problems.

  3. Jeffrey Scott Riester says:

I have a 2018 F-150 XLT 5L with a 10r30 transmission. It’s had issues shifting and jerking periodically seemingly since I bought it. Took it in when it was within warranty and Ford said it was okay. The service invoice states, “OK AT THIS TIME!” The issue never went away, just intensified. Took it back in again a few years later for the exact same shifting and jerking issue, but by this time my truck was 4K over warranty, and Ford said I needed a new transmission and denied me any assistance. How can I become part of this?

  4. Tom Robertson says:

2018 F150 owner (10r80 transmission). Vehicle is being diagnosed this week, hard shifting and shudder above 55mph. Illinois resident, interested in joining the class action suit .

  5. WILLIE D TURNER says:

2020 Ford Expedition XLT Max. I started having problems around 50K miles and when l reported my issues to my Ford dealership l was told that it normal and not to be concerned because it was how it was built to sound. My last Ford Expedition XLT (2017) had 402K miles when l gave it to a relative. The Only problem l had with that vehicle was a replacement of a starter and alternator at 400K.
The issue with my 2020 Expedition XLT Max was inspected by AAMCO at the 75K mark and they indicated to me what the problem was. I notified my Ford Service Department 4x about my concern and they said there were no problems that they could find.

  6. Hunter Thompson says:

Just had mine replaced on my 2019 5.0 with the 10 speed because the cdf drum slipped apart. 5k in cost out of pocket. Wouldn’t even go into drive until it warmed up, ridiculous ford won’t issue a recall to fix their dangerous flaw in the cdf drum. They now have an updated part but the millions of trucks out there with the old part are SOL.

  7. Tanner Levere says:

I would like to know more about this class action suit. I currently own a 2018 f150 in Canada and have a 2018 f150 as a work truck. The work truck just rolled 180,000 km and is starting this issue. Personal truck is only at 100,000 km but has started as well.

  8. Jeff Reynolds says:

2019 F-150, 82,000 miles, had the transmission replaced after it displayed similar symptoms to everyone else. $9000 spent on replacement of a transmission that hadn’t even reached it’s first service interval.
***PLEASE ADD ME TO THE LIST***

  9. Kenneth Gray says:

I have a 2019 F150 with the 3.5 Eco-Boost. I have experienced the same symptoms, so I will not bore you with them — I am having to tow my truck to a transmission shop so they can open it up and see what’s going on. I am going to have to pay for rental while its there (2-3 weeks to get some one to look at it) then, from what I have been told, it will take another week or two to get parts (“if you’re lucky”). Not to mention that some modules are throwing codes that have nothing to do with the transmission, but they (Ford Dealership) are going to charge me $208.80 PER CODE they address unrelated to the transmission. But when one module throws a code – it could throw a code somewhere else, so they really can’t tell if its unrelated or not– so they’ll just charge me for the “40 codes” that have been thrown, according to my FordPass App. Keep in mind- I haven’t had one light go off on my dash until three days ago when I had the start of the problem. How do I join the class action suit to hold Ford accountable for this disgraceful blatant negligence?!?

  10. Fred Garey says:

I have a 2019 F-150 with 3.5 ecoboost (33K mikes) and have this same problem. Worse in and out of 3rd gear but can happen anywhere. And I have been on an expressway in 10th and suddenly downshifted to 3rd or forth with a tremendous jerk. Can’t see how this transmission will last with this gear slamming.
